Thread of PC Woes, Troubles, Problems, and Issues

Argh!

So I dig out my old computer which was just sitting dormant and worked perfectly last I saw (a few months back), now powers up but no display or beeps.... lovely! :wtf:

Pull the ram out see if there is beeps if there is non reset bios.

Finally a response;

I got the board and tested. I have found problems and have taken it to my supplier with a report. They confirmed the results and wanted to swap the board. I told them I do not want the same board as this problem seems to be a well known problem with that chipset. I have asked for a credit and will replace with a new board for you (newer model). I'm now waiting for an answer from the branch manager and will hopefully have a replacement sent to you soon.

They stopped producing 775 quite a while back. The 775 boards would thus all be 2nd hand, spending money on old tech is not advisable. Usage and budget for upgrades?

Using it for everyday use and obviously mild gaming.. budget of about 1.8 - 2k
Would getting a high specced Pentium G dual core vs. entry level i3 be advisable? It's quite a price leap from 900 bucks to 1.5k for the i3.
It sucks being poor lol.

Would sourcing a 775 mobo from ebay be an option.. Looking into doing that rather.

It's a very short term problem, knowing you will need to upgrade down the line anyway. What would you be taking across from old pc considering you have most things, in particular current monitor resolution and types of games. Buying best you can is better, more expensive cpu, cheaper motherboard.

You can try sourcing a 775 motherboard, should be able to find one on www.carbonite.co.za

If your looking to rather upgrade, then I'd say try and get a i3 rather than an old dual core CPU.

I can help with a processor, I have about 3 lying around ranging from P4's, Dual Cores or Core2Duo.

Lemme know if you find a board and I'll send a chip or two.

Really??! Wow thanks mate that's frikkin' awesome of you. Lycan, I've learnt from harsh experience not to buy a mobo from carbonite.. as the board I bought on there is the one I have to replace.. :/

Speaking of old tech...

I've got a full set of 775 generation gear lying around if anyone is interested. (PSU/mobo/CPU/GFX/RAM). E6550 intel cpu, 3850 gfx & some Asus board. PM if interested...and no I'm not splitting a working combo.

Is that with a stock cooler? One of my pet peeves is an overly loud PC.. Just annoys me for some reason.

I have a dead EVGA GTX 460, just stopped working one day. Doesn't get detected in device manager. I opened it, cleaned it up, added new thermal, looked for blown caps, burns etc, nothing. Cleaned the terminals. Plugged it back in, nada. Any ideas on what to try next? (was powering it with a 500w with both 6-pin power connectors inserted.
