What motherboard did you get?

A SATA data port doesn't deliver power, only data. And yes, one data port per drive only. You can get a PCI add-on card if you want more SATA ports.

Not sure which other motherboard manufacturers also do it, but I know Asus have their SATA ports perpendicular to the motherboard itself, so even when the GPU extends over the ports (which the higher end ones usually do) you can still plug the cable into the port.

I'm using an ASUS board so 2 ports are covered and 2 are open and they sit right "in front" of the card leaving just enough space for the 2 SATA cable to connect.

Can you perhaps give the model nr or a link to the site?

Are the ports facing "up" from the motherboard? Usually Asus boards have their SATA ports facing towards the side, so that's weird.
If you want more SATA ports you will have to get a PCI card for more ports.

I will only need the PCI card when I get another SATA device (SSD), which won't be for a while. A new screen is far more important right now.

Many common controllers do not support this feature

i doubt a budget model sata controller as on that board will support that.
