To Pirate or not to Pirate

I'm sure that if everyone could afford it, they would have bought it... But for some, money is more tight than others. :p

Ever heard the saying: "Arm mense bly by die huis"?

What are they supposed to do, cuase they can buy the game, so a pirated game is the next option and while they can't go out, they have something to do. :D
 
I have only bought games that requires the original to play Online.

The rest I copy, play till I'm done with it and pass it on. If the developers want us to buy games:

1. Price them right
2. Make them free for a said period of time. Then charge a minimal subscription.

That way they will only make money if their content is what the people want. If the game is a fail they will not play past the free period. I have burned my fingers to many times with games that looked awesome but ended up to be crap and a complete waste of R 300.
 
I used to do the Rips thing, but a few things changed it:

*I got an Xbox 360, no rips for me.
*I get a lot of Xbox bargains on kalahari.net
*MY PC is so dated now that I the games that actually work on it are discounted to the max! lol
 
Way back in the day everything I got was a copy from a mate. I can't remember the first legit game I got. I think it must have been something like "syndicate" which came on a 4 in 1 cd with some hardware or something.

Now I have started buying all my games. I might still download something I can't find a copy of, like I can't Fallout 3 anywhere so busy downloading (although by the time it finishes, Take2 will probably have stock again).

Also I have made to many mistakes with buying stuff that I really have not enjoyed like Oblivion, Farcry 2, Brothers in Arms and a few others that I have not finished or played much.

In strict terms of the law we're not allowed to do that, but realistically speaking - would you buy a music CD if you haven't listened to the songs on there? Or a car without driving it?

As long as you buy a game that you enjoy playing I don't see a major problem with it.

Thinking back now the 1st original I bought was D.O.T.T. :D

I totally agree with you. I always 'try' before I buy :o.
I have bought a lot of games over the years, but only those that I've really enjoyed.

I suppose that is why they bring out demo's, but I've never had satisfaction with any game's demo before. I personally feel that there is something lacking when playing a demo - maybe knowing I can't complete the game without buying it :D
 
There aren't always demos available for game... :(

Edit: And keep in mind, demos of late are almost as big as the completed game. :D

Anyway OT, what's the verdict on selling used PC games? Particularly in places like here? I think I might try offload some of my bad purchases. Admin's can I go ahead and list them here in a new post or will that be a problem?

Hey thats not a bad Idea selling ur old stuff here maybe u should add that to the suggestions box...
 
And start a new thread, but make it clear that you are only allowed to post if you have something to sell or an inquiry. No spamming, that's why we have a TK. :p

True, and I'm sometimes guilty of that, but only because times are tough. Don't want to get into the whole wife/kids/home/car issues, but I eventually do get around to the ones that were forgotten.
 
Or you can just be really patient and wait until the current titles are abandonware :D
 
I've also decided to go legit and have started to purchase all my old favourite music albums. I do however rip them to my hard drive and I want to reseal and rack all them all.

I have tossed out all of my old pirated games (Never knew I had that many CD's!) and only have Diablo 2, Titan Quest and My WoW cd's left (All Originals).

With regards to games, I find that there is such a lot of crap out there that I can hardly blame anyone for wanting to Pirate something first and then maybe getting the orignal later (Hellgate London comes to mind; I tossed that original away too).

IMO the problem that we, as PC Gamers, face is the fact that we cannot return a game to the shop once we have opened it. Demo's are often too short and always quite what the end product ends up being. We bascially purchase on reviews which is all too often hype / tripe.

So yes, Pirating is bad, but at the same time, why do we, the consumer, have to run the risk when it comes to making a purchase?
