Torchlight 2 release date announced - 20 September 2012

So, anyone here objective enough to compare TL2 to D3 without descending into needless bashing? I quite liked TL1 but did find it a bit boring TBH...

TL2 will have a free demo on release day, so if you aren't sure whether you will enjoy the game that was made by the guys who made D1 and D2, then try the demo and decide for yourself :D

Yeah think I will get my hands on the demo and see for myself what it is like before I start looking around for somebody to make a deal with to buy a code from.

It's still only $20 from a small dev company (less than 40 employees). Personally I don't mind supporting the little guys. I've been following them for a long time on Twitter and their forums and they really appear to be a bunch of decent guys who actually care about how people experience their game.

Just keep a close eye on the special. I'm not sure if the 4 for the price of 3 special will still be available after launch. But knowing Runic it might well be :D

Well if it isn't then I am sure someone around here will be floating around looking to get rid of one of the keys.

Yeah probably. Have you had a look at the launch trailer, there are also lots of gameplay videos available if that will help you decide.

Have seen a couple trailers. Liked the first one so will probably like this one. I got retrenched so I have to watch where my money goes until I get another job working elsewhere.

Aw man, that sucks. Hope you find something quick.

Confession: I never did finish the original Torchlight. For whatever reason, the game failed to grab me -- maybe it was the pacing, the lack of co-op support, or something else entirely. Whatever the case might be, I'll finish Torchlight II. It's come together nicely and feels like a true sequel, to the point where I had completely forgotten that Runic Games is only asking for $19.99 come September 20, 2012.

While getting some hands-on time at PAX, Runic president Travis Baldree recapped many of the changes and additions that went into Torchlight II, both big and small, from the reworked impact of animations to the varying amounts of splash damage associated with attacks. Long story short, the end result is a game which just feels right -- an absolute must for click-heavy titles like action-RPGs. This is not merely more Torchlight, it's better Torchlight.

What stood out to me the most was the combat. Not only did it seem more fluid, but the actual number of creatures -- which have some ridiculous, awesome designs -- seems to be noticeably up. I wouldn't say my Engineer was overwhelmed, but it came close a few times, seemingly right at the sweet spot between gameplay that is either unexciting or overly difficult.

What's happening after the September release? Runic will focus on getting the mod tools out in the coming weeks, and there's also the Mac port to look forward to. While not necessarily a huge deal, Baldree did mention that Steam Workshop will be supported as well. With Diablo III disappointing some players, there's been a lot of pressure placed on Torchlight II. The wait looks to have been worth it.

TL1: 8 hours to play through.

TL2: 30 hours to play through. Act 1-3 about 8 hours each at normal or veteran difficulty. Longer at higher difficulties. Small 4th act.

Level cap is 100. At the end of the first game you'll probably be around level 50 and can then start a new NG+ (new game plus) game, with higher difficulty and more and better loot. Or you can stick around at the end of the game and use the map room. Basically buy or find little pocket dungeon maps and do them by yourself or with friends.

Class skills:
Each class has 30 skills, of which 9 are passives. They are all unique to the class. At every 5 points you get a special bonus. Engineer turret for example: After 5 points turret gets triple shot, then at 10 bullets ricochet + triple shot, at 15 pierce + ricochet + triple shot.

Class special abiltiies:
Embermage: builds up from using skills, once maxed out you have unlimited mana for a few seconds.
Berseker: builds up rage from doing melee attacks, once maxed out 100% crits for a few seconds and increased speed.
Engineers: builds up charges, and different abilities consumes charges to become more powerful. melee skill might become ranged etc.
Outlander: charge bobs up and down and has a scaling effect on how far and how fast they can fire.

I just had a look at my Steam account and playtime for TL1, and it is 9 hours. So the estimation of game length above appears to correlate quite nicely with my experience.

"Torchlight 2 is a lot more similar to Diablo 2 than I actually think Diablo 3 is. Diablo 3 made some really key mechanical changes that might not appeal to everyone, and Torchlight 2 is much more like Diablo 2, but vastly improved. They fixed a lot of the issues that were in that game and that were in Torchlight 1 to be honest.

Torchlight 2 does not require a persistent online connection. It can support LAN play. A lot of people were pissed that Blizzard cut that stuff out of Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2 is only $20."
