Treyarch defends "dated" Black Ops II engine

Although the engine is showing its age, they are absolutely correct, guys love the fast and smooth nature of cod, something that is lacking in pretty much all modern fps multiplayer games, BF3 being a prime example, although BF3 looks gorgeous...its plays bad always feels slow and stuttery, no matter what machine you're running and at what settings you play at.

Not sure how they can call it gorgeous. Maybe they have been drinking too much of the Activision kool-aid. Sure it's passable and maybe a decent compromise to get 60FPS on old ass hardware but it isn't gorgeous.

I still think we are in for a bit of a shock with blops II, I reckon the game is gonna look decent, Treyarch always do a good job...its Infinityward that usually fuck up.

Well, from a graphical stance I would say it's dated, but I wouldn't exactly call it ugly. It might not have all the bells and whistles other games have, but it's still visually pleasing. At least it looks a lot better than BF3, where the 'uber-realistic graphics' often makes it difficult just to see wtf is going on on-screen, seeing as it looks like someone threw dirt at your screen and all the fancy lighting effects does nothing more than blind you.

If anything, my issues with the IW engine is more with it's technical limitations than its visuals.

Dated as hell, but hey as long as the sheep keep on buying the same thing over and over there's no reason for them to progress is there?

It still plays smoother than any other engine out there and that's what really matters.

That's why they have kept using it. I also think this will be the last time they use the engine and from the vids I have watched it looks perfectly fine. It also looks nothing like the original engine from 2005, not even close to that.

Tell me that doesn't look good? and im not just talking game play I am talking about the graphics.

Any word on if we're actually getting dedicated servers? That is pretty much make or break at the moment.

No word on that yet...also waiting to hear whats happening with that..
32 days to launch...Hopefully they'll announce that soon.

I don't see the issue, the engine works brilliantly and makes for a good flowing game. I also don't really see the point in getting a super realistic engine and then bitching because the lighting literally is blinding and all you see is bullets flying out.

My opinion keep the engine, it works and sometimes graphics are overrated compared to game play.

Treyarch have kept no secrets about the fact that the developer is using a seven-year old engine to power the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II; and along with that came a lot of criticism, but the developers don’t really understand why.

Then are pretty much as stupid as I thought.

You know, I've never understood the critism that Call of Duty always seems to get.

Could not agree with this statement more.

Do you even play Call of Duty?
Please explain this to me because I fail to see where Call of Duty lacks innovation.

Then are pretty much as stupid as I thought.

Once again, please explain yourself. I fail to see how this makes the devs stupid?

Call of Duty won't win the award for best graphics but it's the experience that counts! Is innovation only tied to a new engine?
There's a reason why Call of Duty sells over 15million copies each and every year. But to then say all CoD players are sheep and stop innovation within the series? That's retarded. Why change a damn fine formula? Don't change it if it ain't broke!

In the end of the day I'd sooner play a complete and awesome product upon release (Call of Duty) that buy a game riddles with bugs and have to wait several months just for voice chat to work (Battlefield 3).

Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah (Call of Duty) blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah (Battlefield 3).
Any time someone has to put down another game just so they can try and feel better about their game of choice just makes me automatically disregard anything that had to say in the first place.

There are more games than Battlefield and Call of Duty, as much as EA and Activision would like you to think otherwise, so stop constantly referencing one when talking about the other.

Who cares if the engine is "dated"? Cod has always been about gameplay...and its not like they are using the exact same engine from mw3? No they tweaked it to look better and theirs no problem with that.

Well, not sure how many guys play this on console, and how many are PC. From a PC gamer's perspective I'm not going to buy this. No mods, no rented servers and the fact that since MW2 came out they have been porting the game from console, which is just not great in my opinion. Sure they always come out with new kill streak rewards and game types which is great, can never fault them from that point of view, but the PC version just isn't the same without mods which makes the game a lot more fun. Also bear in mind that lots of these innovations that they ended up using came from players and not IW or Treyarch directly, they took someone else's idea and just implemented it. Allowing mods to be created for a game benefits everyone at the end of the day.

My biggest gripe with the new COD games is always having to have an internet connection to play. No more LAN days.

I'm always astounded when people want to pull the 'CoD doesn't innovate' card. No, really, I am.

It's a military FPS ffs. What the hell is it supposed to innovate? You point at an enemy, and you shoot.

Please name one First Person Multiplayer title that is played as much as COD and or BF3 locally?

Will probably not buy it,doesn't offer the kind of game play i like.If it doesn't need tactics, teamwork or an extreme high level of skill to accomplish an objective then it's not worth playing.

My God you're thick.

I was making a comparison between a new engine and a buddy launch vs an old engine and a smooth launch.

Even then, CoD brought innovation in the form of killstreaks, Killcam, the name of the feature escapes me now but that "death card" (You see the your killer's ID that has been customized) and the most recent (And best piece of innovation) was CoD ELITE.

Please name one First Person Multiplayer title that is played as much as COD and or BF3 locally?

And not just locally, internationally as well!

EDIT: I almost forgot to mention that Black Ops II will be emphasizing 'community' and 'e-sports' this year, tell me this isn't innovation!

While you do make valid points.
It is a old engine simply because,

A) It would take close to 2 years to create a entirely new one
B) It runs well on consoles Xbox/PS3 (incase you have not noticed it's probably one of the biggest console titles ever) - Cant stress this one enough.

EDIT: I almost forgot to mention that Black Ops II will be emphasizing 'community' and 'e-sports' this year, tell me this isn't innovation!

Thats not innovation thats doing something they have been doing with SC, SC2, CS 1.6, CS:S CS:GO, Battlefield for years. The innovation they seek is SOMETHING NEW in the game, not new guns, bad guys, x-ray vision (it has all been done before).
