Treyarch defends "dated" Black Ops II engine

My God you're thick.

I was making a comparison between a new engine and a buddy launch vs an old engine and a smooth launch.

Your comment about an old engine providing stability is also incorrect, you just have to look at the launch of Black Ops and how broken the multi-player was for that game at launch, to the point were it was just unplayable on console. I don't really recall having that many issues with BF3 past for few week or so with the whole busted battlelog thing. That's besides the point really, people will use any excuse to throw BF and CoD together.

People compare BF3 and CoD because they're pretty much the only two competitors in the military FPS genre at this point. How many other competitive, multiplaer-focused military FPSes released in the last year?

Thats not innovation thats doing something they have been doing with SC, SC2, CS 1.6, CS:S CS:GO, Battlefield for years. The innovation they seek is SOMETHING NEW in the game, not guys, bad guys, x-ray vision (it has all been done before).

Well, we always hear people going on about there not being innovation in CoD, but how would you like them to innovate? I mean, look at BF3. Two weeks back I had a merry laugh because the devs thought that the improved graphics in BF3 was innovation. The problem is, it's a military FPS. How do you innovate something that basically consists of pointing and shooting?

Exactly, there is no other way to innovate the game anymore. You shoot 1000's of bad guys and follow a story set out to you.

So we're all still playing Doom? :wtf:

In a different setting with guns that now mirror their real-world counterparts, yes.

Look at it like this, aside from technological advances, what exactly has changed from Doom to CoD? A slightly more varied control-set? QTEs? Iron-sights?

Honestly, if innovation is as you've classified it then we have not seen an onnovative game in years.

I don't think innovation is just seeing something new in a game, that's just a new feature. Innovation is taking the steps to creating a game that is more immersive in all departments. Uncharted brought nothing new to the gaming scene at all, but it's emphasis on the "active cinematic experience" was a HUGE step for gaming, that is something I consider innovative.

To bring it back to CoD, we've always had clans since the addition of TDM in competitive MP but what Activision have done with ELITE is bring us a service that has been built for and centres around clans. Something that is definitely innovative.

Now while we've always had e-sports and commentary for games, it's always been done outside of the game and by a few people. What Treyarch have done is allow any random Joe to record a game, save it to their cinema and provide commentary, tactics etc... whether you're playing on PC or console. How is this not innovative?

As Graal has said, there's not much CoD can do in terms of "innovation" but neither can BF3/Killzone/Halo etc... And that has always been the centre of any argument regarding CoD vs "some game". CoD is definitely ahead of the pack when it comes trying to give us more to do online, and that is why CoD is king.

Back to the topic at hand...

I will agree, Black Ops has it's fair share of problems at launch, but it was not broken. Even then, it wasn't across all platforms, the controvesy was based around the copious amount of lag on the PS3. Xbox had no such issues, and any CoD installment released by IW, that is why everyone was up in arms.

I'm not sure about the performance of BF3 on PC, but on console the game had a very rocky first few months. Voice chat was broken for about two, mixed squads was an issue and there were some graphical issues.

In the end of the day, I don't try and justify CoD's superiority over BF, I play and enjoy both games although my preference in CoD by far. I just hate it when the whole "innovation" thing get's brought in when all that's innovative about BF is the new engine with each installent.

Dated as hell, but hey as long as the sheep keep on buying the same thing over and over there's no reason for them to progress is there?

Please explain how they are not progressing?Every single cod game to date has brought new features and better graphic from there predecessors,And what's more they are actually putting an effort into the E-sport feature which is great for it because cod games sell an extreme amount of copies every year. And the new features like a completely overhauled killstreak and create A class system that only means progress IMO

I'm sorry but every time I see people having the CoD V BF debate I flash over to team Jacob vs that other Vampire dude thing (the shiny one).

Lol

My 2 cents, i don't believe graphics are that important. But I do believe its one aspect to gaming that adds to an entire package of what makes gaming fun. Keep moving forward, and personally think Treyarch have been using the same engine for long enough and should move on. How far can you really go with the quake 3 engine? Yes its heavily modified, but at some point I think its a good idea to move onto something new.

love the first Black Ops for that reason alone Ill get the second. Dont actually give a stuff what it looks like, it looks good enough anyway.
I also love BF3.

But why? Yes its dated but its not like it looks like shit does it? Cod has always been about smooth gameplay not shiny new graphics. The engine works for it so why change it? If they hit the wall were they can't make it look better then they can change to another engine or create there own engine.

People say that but I don't think they really mean it. Otherwise you would still be happy playing HL1 DM and GoldenEye. Sure visuals aren't the most important thing but they make a difference and let the developers do things they otherwise might not be able to do.

Well that's the problem with arguments like this, everyone has their own opinion. we are all different and like things for different reasons. We can all keep arguing about why COD is great and why it isn't. We will never get a conclusion. My opinion is I think COD doesn't improve enough between releases, your opinion is it does. I personally don't think the graphics are very good, you think they are fine. None of us a right or wrong because we are disagreeing on something that is subjective.

Treyarch always do a good job...its Infinityward that usually fuck up.
Just to elaborate on this: One must distinguish between "two" Infinityward(s). After CoD4 pretty much all the (legendary) team members that mattered left & were replaced by random people from various Activision subsidiaries. Hence the contrast between (old) Infinitywards legendary status and Joker's "[new]Infinityward that usually fuck up" comment.
/Or maybe I misunderstood The Joker
