Trying to get into running, but I'm super fat.

However, it is the same thing as no carbs before bed - so either IF contradicts itself, or no carbs before bed works.

How so? All IF is, is consuming your total calories for the day in an 8 hour window. Whether it is before sleep, or not. Your total carbs does not change. So you will be consuming your full days carbs, that you would have spaced out, even before bed, in 8 hours. There isn't a contradiction there at all.

so i went for a short run just now. and i mean literally SHORT. it was 3km in total, but i was buggered after about 1km :-( main reason is due to teh fact that i am slightly overweight, rather portly and EXTREMELY UNFIT. but i think the takkies are also to blame, as there were patches when my chest and lungs felt fine but i had debilitating pain in my shins and calves were cramped to hell. i was using sort sort of arb, no-name FILA takkies :o

i guess i need a new pair or proper running shoes, but not sure what to get. Is there any specific brand that's better than the others ?

i have been eyeballing the pair below, but not sure if they any good ?

Dude, 3Km is not a small feat! 1Km is not a small feat either! Jeez.

I think proper shoes will always help, but I don't think it can be blamed. :) People used to run barefoot, heck, they do now!

I agree. Going for a 3km run is not an easy thing to do if you've never done it before. I'm doing 3km a day now after 1 month of constant exercise - and it's not getting any easier either. But I did notice that my time has improved a lot. The proper shoes makes the biggest difference in the world, but in the end, you're going to have some form of pain and aches in the beginning. I have just recently managed to get over my bursitis.

I wouldn't spend that much on your first pair of running shoes. You should get a nice pair of Adidas for R800. If you rolling in cash though go for it :)
Shin pain can be the shoes and you can try shorten your stride but you are going to feel some discomfort on your first couple of runs.

I got a 50 percent off voucher (thanks InnerSelf) so I can get those Reeboks for 650 bucks. That seems like a bargain for such a killer running shoe, no?

Just bought a pair of New Balance at Totalsports on special for R650 (marked down from R1200). They make awesome running shoes (better than Adidas and Reebok imho).

So you saying that it's the best running shoe I can get for R650?

What about the Nike vs Reebok vs Adidas vs Asics debate?

Not sure about Reebok for running, but New Balance have superior build quality when compared to those you've listed. They cost a bit more usually, but last much longer.

but i certainly wont be able to buy a decent New Balance for R650 dude. this way, im getting a semi-top-of-the-range Reebok for a knockdown price.

is it normal for one's back and shoulders to be aching and sore after a 3km run? thats got nothing to do with fitness levels (which would only affect me on the day during the run). this seems like its due to the dodgy shoes i ran in. shocks went up legs and into muscles on back and shoulders ?

Yes its the pressure you putting on the back when running as your body jolts with every step. That is why you need decent shoes:p

i went to TotalSports at lunchtime to try on a pair of Reebok One Series Cushoned. felt pretty awesome :-) but then again, i piece of wood with nails facing upward would probably feel better than the dodgy shoes i currently have :-P

i am gonna try out a few more pairs this weekend at the Woodmead factory shop and then decide on Monday.

R1500 is not a cheap shoe. And, they would not be the official shoe of the comrades marathon if they were crap :)

well im a cyclist and i should do abit of running but sigh so boring :D im starting trail running more my style.

When it comes to cycling all comes down to how far how fast how high. 30km is far but if it takes longer than hour 20 then something is wrong, as well no point doing 30km on flat or down hill. ( did you do it with road or MTB ? )

but yea running is good, i consider my self a fair MTB cyclist when i tryed trail running i could feel the burn after a 2km.
when on the bike and i see large people on the bike i encourage them, sometimes ride next to them setting pace giving tips ect. It takes alot to start any sport, even more when of large size. I always say to them well done when they finished a hill with me (sometimes i get evil looks :D ) but then i saw remember this, everyday you train you not getting any worse and you lapping the people on the couch ^^

I would seriously have taken up cycling if it was within my budget. Seems that this time of year, there are bills and whatnot coming out of the woodwork :)

Honest opinion, is something like the Silverback Alpine 3 or similar even worth it? Or should one just save until they can go over R10K and get something semi decent?

well the bike is not bad just depends on how you will ride and how hard :D
you can get a good 29" bike for 6k easy. Cycling is fun but o so heavy in the pocket if you go hard but not so bad for average riding.

I have actually thought about going to a store where they assess your running style, but at the moment, I don't have one. lol.
Don't bother - they're mostly full of sht anyway. 99% of the time they'll go with "You need more inner arch support...here buy this shoe".

I've had more luck with just trusting the manufacturers. e.g I know Nike will never work for me (feet too wide), but Reebok is usually a winner. The trick for me is to find a Reebok set that isn't fugly...

Its a lot harder than the tredmill.
Really? I battle maintaining my balance on a treadmill...maybe mine skips beats or something but occasionally I get that "recovery" instinct...like a chair falling over backwards where your body's instincts just kick in to maintain balance.
