Vehicle Insurance help

This is either because:
- Your car is super old (Model T Ford style)?
- You have a supercar and you are 16?
- You have crashed 300+ cars on your previous insurance?
- You threatened the sales person?

No seriously, why would they refuse to insure your car?

Funny, I used to be with Hollard, but my broker got me to move to Santam (Since then moved to M&F). At the same time, the same broker got a guy who works with me to change from Santam to someone else, basically because our situations and insurance needs are different, and different insurance companies suited us better. That's the kind of thing that regular folks like us don't really understand properly.
I changed brokers and the new brokers put me with Hollard. I think certain brokers have connections at the various companies or something. Overall I can't complain. As far as I know, with my Hollard policy, the excess is less than with Santam but that can probably be negotiated with them as well.

you dont have to go through a broker with Santam. you can contact them direct. i find its even cheaper than going through a broker. i just changed my insurance today for my new car (2012 1.2 Rio) and for a full comprehensive insurance including car hire and that shortfall cover im paying R643.02... for a brand new car. everywhere else i got quote over R750...
Santam do quote better than most. Their quotes are the closest to what I'm paying now. However, I would still recommend a broker in case there are some issue and they don't want to pay out. In my case, the insurance company refused to pay out because the laptop wasn't stolen out of my home... which is kind of the reason the laptop was insured since it is always mobile and the chances of being stolen anywhere else is much higher than at my home.
This was back when laptops were still like R15000 for a decent laptop, so quote a bit of money that I would have lost if not for the broker.

Outsurance, MiWay, etc. are all a scam, and Hippo is apparently owned by the same company so steer clear of their recommendations.

Get yourself a broker and behold the vast savings and lack of bullshit they'll bestow upon you. (Personally I recommend Alexander Forbes, best rate I could find and exceptional service.)
+1
Miway do phone me from time to time to offer me a lower premium than what I'm paying at the moment. So the one day I decided to entertain them, spent probably 30 minutes on the phone with them giving them all my details and they eventually came back with a premium that is double what I'm paying now. Then after going to some bigshot manager who can "make things happen", they reduced the quote quite a bit... but still over R500 than what I'm paying. Was probably a bit awkward for them :)

So here we come to the verdict, after talking to a hell of a lot of companies and brokers the verdict is this:

They refuse to insure my car. :(

So no insurance for me.
What car is it? I know sometimes they refuse custom performance cars or cars that have been rebuilt where the engine and chassis number don't match.

Im with Santam, they offered me R650 with an excess of R2500. Closest to that was R950 and excess R4000. Think outsrance were around R1500, they were nice and said they could offer R950 at R10 000 excess, i politely said no thanks.

Im interested in this whole broker idea, who are the best brokers? I got a call from FNB brokers the other day, but they were still more for the premium and excess...

Here's the car I have:

VW fox 1988, no custom work on it. Sure it's a 1988 model. It's got almost 300 000 on the clock. It's only been in one accident, before I bought it. The engine's been redone, chassis, suspension everything is brand new except for the body and seats. :p
So there's nothing wrong or custom with the car.

I've never been in a accident before. I've never claimed, I'm a passive person so I didn't threaten the broker ;)
I'm not 16 with a supercar... though that would be nice.

But their verdict was that my car is too old. Not even for 3rd party apparently. Makes me extremely sad.

Yep, a car that old is a liability to them... They cannot insure it for book value as cars over a certain amount of years do not have a book value.

Hope you get someone that can help.

It's quite a conundrum, I mean people who earn what I do don't have money for a better car. So we hope Insurance can help us out, then Insurance can't help you out. So what do you do? Open a savings account and put some money in it each month? Hoping that when you do get into a accident, you'll have enough to pay for any damage caused to you or the third party.

I'm tired of living in a environment where money = worth. :p

Try PSG Consultants.
Santam is, in my experience the best. - Currently have my ZX6-R @ R300p/m comprehensive cover
