No one said one life is worth more than another.
Certain deaths just affect others more so than some others.

When it comes to family and friends; what you've mentioned above is true. But, games and other sources have different effects to different people.

A male being killed in a game, the same way a female gets killed in a game or movie should affect the viewer in an equal manner.

Recall playing Doom and getting feeling of something standing in the room behind me. Maybe not gory, but let's just say it was uninstalled and given away. :o
