Voicy's Epic WoW starter guide

Nice beginners guide,

but I reckon Wowhead should be bumped up to 5... in comparison to Thottbott (although both owned by the same company): Wowheads database can compare items and filter through specifics, the quests (and every item, object,spell, ability) all have solutions (in the comments) and majority have detailed descriptions. The forums... well apart from the odd theorycrafter, the community are active mature and helpful. Thottbott is plagued with noobs, asking pointless questions on every item. It would take me 5-6x longer to find the answer on Thottbott compared to searching on Wowhead

Wall of Text crits you for 1337 Dmg

Ok, so as some of you know, I'm quite new to WoW.

Currently I have a Fire-specced Human Mage, at level 27. My question is this. Does a mage get a pet/horse/ram/elephant/tiger thinghy to ride on? Running to all the places is a wee bit tiring :-/

At lvl 30 you'll be able to train your riding skill and purchase a mount. IIRC mounts are still race locked.

This means unless you are exalted with another city, you are stuck to purchasing the following mount depending on your race:

Draenai = elephant
Dwarf = Goat
Gnome = mechano ostrich
human = horse
Night elf = tiger/saber

Also, you might want to read the mage links I posted to check out their forums on which spec is best for leveling...

I know Fire = best for raiding, frost = pvp ... not sure if frost will benefit leveling more, due to better instant casts - altho your 3 second flame ball does MAJOR damage.

Level 30? Hmmm...

Some other plonker told me level 40. Glad i can get it at 30 heehee :D

I went for the fire spec purely because I love fire! The pyroblast takes a while to cast, but hell it is strong! When I take on a high level target I usually bliksem them with Pyroblast, fireball, firestrike and Arcane explosion. After that the target is usually dead, or severely damaged :D

You younglings are lucky - it always used to be lvl 40. But then Bliz got soft :p I can't remember how much training is though... It might still be 100g + 15g for the mount.

If you dig fire, stay with it... the best spec isn't always the most fun.

That's nothing. Expert riding is 1000G, Artisan Riding is 5000G and Cold Weather Flying is another 1000G.

Luckily I'm a druid, and I got expert riding automatically when I learned flight form. I still needed to get 5000G for my swift flight form though. But it's definitely worth it, especially for druids.

I don't think there is a surefire way to make a lot of money. At least not at lower levels. When you hit 80 you can do dailies. That gives about 300G a day.

For others, it's really dependent on you server. One common method is getting two gathering professions and just sell all of the mats. Mining/skinning or herbalism/skinning is the best combinations, since you can't track mining and herb nodes at the same time.

Another method I used before is buying pets from the vendors (around 50S) and then selling them for 3-4G. Don't put a lot on at the same time though. It's easy to saturate the market. The books that teach the expert skills for first aid, fishing and cooking can also be sold like that.

You can also take disenchanting. Then do dungeon runs to get greens and blues and disenchant them. Not sure how good that is at lvl30, because there isn't many dungeons you can solo at that level, if any.

Can you give more information on what level and what professions you have? Then we can give you a better idea on what to do.

At the moment I have herbalism and Alchemy, but I wanna quit on the Alchemy part.

My mage is level 27 at the moment... My herbalism skill is very low because I haven't really started using it yet...

You're actually fine with herbalism & alchemy for the following reason:

a) Herbalism = gathering profession ... you run around and pick flowers during your quests. You make lots of money by selling these raw materials.

b) Alchemy, albeit a crafting profession, you use to make consumables i.e. health potions etc. So people will KEEP buying your stuff.

On my 1st char (i.e. 1st time I played the game) I made 1000g before I hit lvl 40 simply by selling my mining & skinning material on the Auction House (AH).

Dailies are a sure way of making money... 300g/day will sort you out 6-love. However, there are alchemists who sell their potions, elixirs etc. and rake in 1000g/day. My best profit margins were mining Cobalt and selling the ore I gathered in 2hours for about 700g.

Again - do something you enjoy. Having said that ... you'll enjoy having money more than anything. So if you take 1 piece of advice on here ... level your herbalism ASAP!

Alchemy isn't bad. Like most crafting professions, it only starts to make good money at max levels. At lower levels, some of the elixirs that sell is elixir of defense and elixirs of strength/agility/wisdom. Health and mana potions doesn't sell that great at the lower levels, likely due to decent droprates from mobs. But at higher levels (runic potions), they sell quite well. At the lower levels you'll probably make more money selling the herbs than the potions.

If you drop alchemy, you can try skinning or inscription. Skinning would be the better option for making fast money. Inscription will also have the problem of only making a lot of money at higher levels. Skinning would also be faster to level up, as it's basically just a grind. You can probably do it in 1-2 days. Inscription is a bit more difficult to level quickly. The recipies are only orange for 5 levels before turning yellow. Then you have to go back to the trainer. You'll have to build up herbs/pigments/inks beforehand and then head to the trainer and skill up.

The problem I have is, I have no idea how to use alchemy at all. I've never usedit, it just sits there doing nothing...

What would you guys recommend?

It's easy. If you open the Alchemy screen, you will see a list of recipies. If you click on a recipy, you will see what you need to create it. Gather the necessary herbs and get the vials from the alchemy supplies vendor or any tradesman, and then you can make that potion or elixir.

If you have all the ingredients for a recipy, there will be a number next to the name showing how much you can make.

As for which potions and elixirs sell. Best bet is to make some of each and look what sells. In my experience, elixir of defense, elixir of lion's strength, elixir of agility and those type of elixirs sell the best.

Refer back to my professions guide.

In essence:

If you're a 1st time player:

- Take up gathering professions by using a combination of either Mining or Herbalism along with Skinning.

As a friend of mine said "It's a sin not to take skinning ... there are FAR too many animals out there whose corpses go to waste." You'll agree the 1st time you skin an animal and "arctic fur" drops that you sell for 75g!

The reason we say mining OR herbalism is because you can track either of them with chartographer (so the nodes show up on your minimap) , but you can't track both at the same time.

- Once you get to lvl 80 you can drop one i.e. skinning and take up alchemy. Then you can "power level" it in 2 days to max and start earning cash off it while your dailies and herbs bankroll it.

Ok, thanks for that advise Voicy. I will defo give that a go.

Another question... How do I go about dropping the alchemy and getting skinning? :confused:

Go to character screen and click on skills. Select Alchemy. At the top half of the screen, it should display it as a partially filled bar. There should be a sign next to it (circle with a stripe through it diagonally). Just click on the sign and a confirmation box should pop up asking if you want to remove it.
