Warning all gamers, don't join Afrihost.

whats the best alternative ? I am considering either Web Africa or Openweb. But i see that Web Africa capped accounts are all SHAPED. is this noticeably problematic ?

I use their "shaped" accounts and iv never noticed a real difference. If anything I might see a 20ms difference in online games until close of business. But very rarely.

FOTM = WA

WebAfrica

Give it a whirl

Mostly p2p, problem the dl speed doesn't get better during off peak. I leave it on overnight and it dls like 400mb and on a 4mb line thats just cruel [emoji21]

I'm on a 150gb capped account (no notice of shapimg) and at that rate I'm barely tickling my limit.

First of all, torrent clients/peers will try to connect on TCP ports 6881 thru 6999. ISPs will apply QoS (Quality of Service) on traffic hitting these ports. QoS can be applied on traffic class (class name or CoS), protocol header description files, Real-Time Protocol (RTP) protocol port, port type, peer-to-peer traffic, etc, etc. Essentially what the ISP will do is (very cleverly) apply the lowest QoS priority to based on the traffic class for P2P traffic by matching the outbound packet with a number of rules. Essentially even if you ONLY allow your torrent client to connect on port 80, 443 or 8443 (HTTP & HTTPS ports) you will still get caught by one or more traffic classification rules. Blocking by IP for torrents is an absolutely futile effort BTW, as mentioned is some of the above posts. Blocking on port numbers alone is also completely futile as torrent clients will revert to port 80 if all else fails. Torrents clients have also started with Protocol encryption (PE), message stream encryption (MSE) or protocol header encrypt (PHE) which proved effective for a while until ISPs learnt how to identify traffic better. It's a constant cat and mouse game though to block/classify P2P traffic.

Certain types of traffic (specifically the real-time protocols) will always get the highest QoS rules applied to them, this is generally things like Skype & SIP type traffic.

Sorry, what I wanted Tent to read on is more like how a Torrent is downloaded. What I mean is, does he know that it's impossible to download a torrent with no seeders or that the torrent is extremely slow if there is only a few seeders? This is a nice explanation.

How long does it usually take to have adsl activated on a line? I need to carefully plan my transition from Iburst to adsl.

But isnt it general knowledge that their uncapped accounts to get shaped...im pretty sure its in their t's and c's...i have a capped account with them and have not experienced any of this

I also have a capped account, and have never had this issue.

Hahahaha, don't get me started on MTN. MTNs backbone network must be held together by duct tape and prayers if you ask me.

Weird though, Axxess runs on the Mtn backbone and it runs like a dream.
Got rid of Afrihost now, wanted to go back to Vox but they couldn't be bothered to reply to an email for 2 days so went for Axxess and so far I am very happy.

Let me clarify my statement. They have the best equipment, it's just their configuration that lacks, and that inexplicably at times you find that they lack standby equipment or redundant equipment or links. Large parts of their network is also not covered by generators or UPS

And to top it off the majority of changes and fixes are not documented so over three days with three different technicians you will start from step 1 and move through to step 5 when eventually you are telling them what to change to fix the problem.

Axxess has some great engineers though who know what is where and if i recall are pretty "independent" within MTN's core and really only rely on their breakout links/ bandwidth.

Please dont even start on Vox ... haha

Hahaha... who are you with by the way?

I don't really count as my company provides me with a business DSL account through one of our sister companies which is equivalent to the account type the administrators of said ISP has, that said I'm definitely not allowed to download torrents

As a former Afrihost subscriber, this was pretty much my experience in the final three months of my time with them. Constant ping spikes on Mumble, lots of issues stemming from their network management and running out of capacity, Youtube's data doing a round-trip to the UK and back before reaching me, even their mail server didn't like any of the Blackberry phones that I set up with it. The reps over on the MyBB forums try their best to keep things going well and make everyone happy, but despite their effort, my experience with a 2Mb Business Uncapped account just wasn't up to snuff.

I'm now on Crystal Web's 4Mb Uncapped account and things are going swimmingly now.

I've always advocated for Afrihost but as of late i have constant high pings so changing to WA or one of them

I would just like to add that I'm experiencing the same packet loss even with a capped account from AH. My uncapped account from Incredible Connection never disconnects on Xbox LIVE whereas my capped account from AH disconnects every hour or so.

Made worse ofcourse by those sappy emails Gian keeps sending.

My AH account has been a bit up and down lately, but the last time I mailed them to say it's bad they did something that seems to have stabilized it, so it's still ok for me for now.

i have a 4 mb uncapped with AH, its because of their shaping policy that we get the packet loss (300-500 ping in csgo games coz packet loss) there have been emails back and forth about it but the end result is always the same. "shaping should have no effect on any gaming" and they seem to always be investigating but never finding a solution..

I am on a 4Mbps Capped account with AH. I must one of the very few that hasn't been inflicted with their nonsense. Many I have spoken to are having problems. Have they become too "fat", too complacent?
