Watch Dogs won't look as good as promised

Awesome new trailer! Still looking forward to this. The only thing that really bothers me about the graphics is the sub-par facial animation. I was hoping this wouldn't be an issue anymore this gen. Naughty Dog is one of the only developers that seems to get it right. Everyone seems to underestimate the importance of realistic eye movement.

I have a funny feeling that this game is going to tank, badly. First off, they're backtracking on graphical fidelity, which on a next-gen flagship title is an absolute "no no". So the only thing they have going for it is gameplay - and to me it seems like Assassins Creed with a Cellphone.

I'm not touching this game with a 10 foot pole until there are a TON of reviews out.

...is an absolute "no no"...

Hard to read that in any other way :p

So in other words good graphics can save a bad game? Because that's what your post implies. That the gameplay isn't going to be good, but the game wouldn't tank if it at least had good graphics.

That's... odd, to say the least.

Either way, I would be incredibly surprised if it does tank. It's one of the few AAA games releasing this year that looks like it might actually be good and so far it's the only AAA game that I feel deserves a preorder.

Nope...just like a "good" gameplay can't save a game with terrible graphics. In this day and age most of us (most of us) expect a decent level of graphics along with good gameplay. It's why we are more impressed with games like Crysis 3, than minesweeper or chess.

As someone who enjoyed the hell out of Hotline Miami, I strongly disagree.

Hotline Miami wasn't touted as a next-gen flagship system seller. It had its own unique art style which was actually very good.

Some of you are arguing simply because you feel like arguing and you're missing the point completely. If a game in 2014 uses a rendering method that looks like something from 2005, it's going to suck. What makes it worse, is that they initially tried to literally con people into believing this game is going to look "amazeballs".

But that's fine - you guys can go ahead and buy this game. I'll sit back and wait. I know a balls-up when I see it. I've seen this movie before and I know how it ends.

Saying the game looks like something from 2005 is a huge exaggeration. It still looks better than any last-gen open-world game imo, GTA V included.

I haven't had pre-order regret since Hitman Absolution. I hope Watch Dogs doesn't let me down - I was sold on the concept a long time ago, but as Neo touched on, I've been getting the impression that it's a whole lot of recycled ideas from previous Ubisoft games wrapped in a pretty package. Still, it will probably be fun - I'm not often let down by Ubisoft's big titles.

At this point, I just hope and pray it will work on my laptop with 4gb ram or they release a patch to lower the RAM requirement like they did with COD: Ghosts which my laptop ran fine on medium graphics.

Not so worried about framer ate just that it should run min 30fps for me :)

Here is a quote I would like to share on this whole Watch Dogs debate:

Speculation leads to Expectation, Expectation leads to Disappointment, Disappointment leads to Hate, and Hate leads to the Dark Side.

Anyway, my pre-order has been in for a month now.

I get the whole gameplay over graphics argument but this is the "Next Gen" consoles, PC gamers have been running 1080p graphics for years now. Games are only going to get even more graphically intensive so if these consoles cannot even push 1080p at the get go, then what can we expect in 3 or 4 years time? Xbox 360 and PS3 really pushed the bar when they were released, I feel the new consoles should do the same! (rant over)

Last time I am gonna bother with this...UbiSoft were the ones that promised us an incredible visual feast, they were the ones that claimed the E3 footage was how the game would look, and that's why many people ordered it...myself included. Now they are claiming shit like this

Watch Dogs creative chief Jonathan Morin said in a Ubisoft blog post that it was more important for Watch Dogs to deliver “an amazing next-gen experience” than a 1080p resolution.

“Resolution is a number, just like framerate is a number. All those numbers are valid aspects of making games. But you make choices about the experience you want to deliver. In our case, dynamism is everything. Exploration and expression are everything.”

“You want to have a steady framerate, but you want to have dynamism at the core of the experience. The same goes with resolution,” said Morin.

I am sorry but you are one thick fucking liar, just like the rest of your friends from EA, Sony and Microsoft.

The game in its current form looks nowhere near as good as it did when it was 1st shown to us, that includes the pc version.
Its the old bait and switch routine and everyone keeps falling for it.

In fact I don't even wanna be labeled as a gamer anymore..cause we are all just too happy to take shit like this and eat it up.

Yeah, uhm, sorry Neo. I think you're on your own here. Good gameplay trumps graphics any day of the week. A game with great gameplay will not tank simply because it has slightly less impressive visuals. Most of us are not that shallow.

snipped for brevity

Don't you game exclusively on PC, though? I which case this shouldn't affect you at all.

This is just an unfortunate side-effect that console gamers have to deal with. When they were released, the new consoles were already being outperformed by midrange PCs. If someone wants to game with a console, that's just something they'll have to make peace with. It sucks that the game won't run at the resolution the devs originally thought it would, but if someone doesn't like this kind of thing happening they shouldn't have chosen a console as their gaming device.

If graphics fidelity is the most important thing for someone, they should be gaming on PC. That's not elitism, it's just the way things work. Back in the day when I bought my PS3, I was aware that I was going to have to deal with sacrifices in the graphics department when I buy games for it.

But it does affect me because even the pc version has been diluted. The video's back then and now are completely different, they used different lighting and different AA, they were running a pre rendered video as well.

So they pretty much knew the game wouldn't look anything like that, but you know gamers are suckers so they don't give a shit.
Then they say things like the part I quoted in my other post.

The pc version will not look anything like the 1st video's we saw and that's why I am pissed.
They hooked us all with the amazing visuals.
