Web Africa discontinues FreeZone for uncapped ADSL users

Just don't ever change that ! My Titan Complete package was really good actually but greediness won the round and so I trusted their sales people and changed to uncapped.

It hasn't been overly bad, but it is a tad restrictive for normal usage and then the gaming problems was just the drop that filled my bucket :( Will see how tonight goes.

Lol, some people dunno what uncapped actually is it seems. Streaming radio all day or YouTube even half a day eats up loads of megabytes. Of the 120GB a month I do, about 20 or 30 is series/movies. To have a rolling window is idiotic and makes you use the internet at weird times instead of being free to do whatever, whenever you want. And now to still take away something that at least you could do game updates with and not get throttled? And people defending it? Lol!

Thank you Mweb for being light years ahead of everyone else ........

It's the end if the world... For once i'm going to.... Agree with MH

What I don't get is why guys moan about this. I also don't get how people can download so much in a month..Seriously..Up and till recently thanx to Satan aka Telkom not fixing my line, I ran a 4 mb uncapped unshapped account and I struggled to do more than 50GB a month. I admit it helps that I am on the Wug getting all my series and stuff, but damn how people can download 300-400GB a month is beyond me. Was kinda off topic but anyway.

Modern games are quite big. Just downloading swtor client would eat half of that 50 gig. 300-400gig might be much but I easily do 100-150 gig just through steam/game downloads, online gaming, youtube and live football match streaming.

Thankfully mweb doesn't have any rolling caps bs. :D

Guys I have no idea how anyone can think Mweb is awesome, I have had nothing but shit from the first month we joined. Browsing so slow it's like back in the day, 56k modem speeds.

Downloaded like 60/70Gb the first month and my connection got killed even further. The next month was a bit better for 2 weeks, then the same shit. Notified Mweb we'll be moving to new ISP well before the due date.

They respond after the due date and then later notifies us that because WE were late, not THEM, we have to pay for another month and can't end at the end of the month we intended to.

Now we are in our last month, meaning that the service we got then pales in comparison to the horrifying service we are receiving now. Broken internet, browsing slower than ever, games lagging like crazy, etc. everything more fucked up than the previous times.

Thank you Mweb for the worst service ever, I will never be able to forget how much you guys fail!

Never had any issues with mweb. Had a bit of latency issue with swtor but they have fixed it now.

I constantly do 100gig + a month and performance is almost always good on my 4mbps uncapped.

Been with WA since they launched uncapped. I agree with them, FreeZone on uncapped is completely pointless. I've never used it, never needed it and it has never made a difference.

Just because you have never used it doesn't make it pointless. If you buy a game on Steam and it's 20GB, WHY do you have to wait until midnight to download? Freezone meant you could get your Steam games and patches without having to worry about them capping you out, now you do.

The whole point of uncapped is so that you don't have to give a crap about what or how you download, if you feel like getting something YOU GET IT. If you have to sit and count megabytes like a regular capped account then it's defeating half the purpose.

That's exactly it. I DON'T wait until midnight to download it.

The "throttling" is superficial at best or at least has never been of any significant impact to me. When throttled, I still get 350kB/s off Steam.

And it's not all that often that I'm throttled either. However, there are folks who are pretty much permanently throttled (read: very heavy users) who get by quite well too.

The FreeZone was pointless on an uncapped product.

I see, well my bro will be testing out a WA uncapped account so I can always compare with my Mweb account. As far as heavy users go, I would probably be one of those and have never felt the bandwidth noose. :)

Hope he likes 'em. I'm quite smitten with them. Skype works perfectly, Steam downloads full-speed and it has the best international latency I've ever come across.

Myself along with the minority of their clients had some major grief recently with bizarre lagspikes during DL+ and occasionally in the evenings after 17:00. Seems to have been resolved as of yesterday.

Also, I LOVE their user control panel. Best one in the country, next to Afrihost's <3

So, yeah, really hope your bro has a good experience with them. They really do listen, at least that's how it seems :D

Na, mweb is easy and hassle free, took 10 minutes to get the account, i havent spoken or heard from mweb since. Dl what i want when i want without any speed issues or latency problems.

You're lucky. I was with MWEB for a week before cancelling. Slow Steam downloads (150-200kB/s), jittery Skype video and video streaming would buffer constantly. Easily one of my worst uncapped experiences in ZA.

Was with OpenWeb for the last two years on their Gold package. Was decent but there was always an issue and OpenWeb can be pretty unprofessional, ambiguous, disingenuous, inarticulate, self-serving and remarkably thick when given the time.

lol ... lucky indeed. When I initially tried signing up for MWeb it turned into such a pain in the ass that I cancelled and went with WebAfrica instead.

That was what ticked me off the most!

When I signed up, they charged me for three months! They charged me pro-rata for the last three days of the month I ordered in, then charged me for the next two months and told me I'd only be billed again at the end of the second month. I was like "Whaaaaat?" No wai! GIEFS MONEH BACK NAO!

Took ages to get a response out of that. And the one rep on the MyBB forums, who reassured me that it would only be pro-rata for the current month and full-price for the following, went quiet after I asked him what happened. The last I heard from him was "I'll look into it."

It was actually the other rep who helped sort me out after I cancelled (big kudos to him!).

NONE of those issues with WebAfrica. First subscription went off flawlessly for R599 on my credit card

And support is always friendly, courteous and professional. Although I kinda got a little ticked off with one guy the other night who asked me for a traceroute and a screenshot of my SWTOR lagspikes even though there were bajillions of those already done further down in the ticket AND a video posted to YouTube.

But apart from that, happy days :)

Best ISP I've come across and best uncapped service too. At least for me :p And as long as the hiccups have been dealt with, it'll stay that way >:3

The last response in my ticket with WebAfrica was "our engineers said theyre not refunding the data because steam is not officially supported by freezone"

Just like that, no punctuation. Not even a 'sorry' anywhere in sight. And I might add that this response came only after I hadn't received an answer to the ticket for more than a day and had to contact them to find out whether they had an answer to my ticket yet. I absolutely flipped my lid over it.

Either way, for what it's worth, my OpenWeb Gold account on VB is more or less the closest I'm going to get to a true uncapped account without actually having a true uncapped account. Perfect latencies all day long, Steam downloads at full speed all day long, just http downloads and torrents are slightly shaped during the day.

They might be one of the 'underdog' ISPs, and talking to their support feels like talking to a wall, but I'm OpenWeb for life yo.

I'm no loyalist by any means but I have to agree with Lycanthrope on WA. I've bounced from Afrihost, to MWeb to WA to a few others and I've had capped and uncapped accounts with a lot of ISPs and WA has given me the best service to date.

I am not a heavy user but since I was on leave for 6 weeks over Dec / Jan, I decided to see how far I could push the WA rolling window and how badly I would be throttled. I set up random downloads and killed that 3.46Gig rolling window over a few days and I would drop from 350Kbp/s to around 250Kbp/s which in my books was not bad at all.

The only time I really noticed poor performance was during the 12:00 - 1:00 DL+ when things were really slow.

As to gaming, my son and I played quite a bit of BF3 and our pings average around 30ms to SGS and WAGE servers.

Bottom line, I am happy with the service as an average user and part time gamer. :)

If you want to keep the FreeZone with your WebAfrica uncapped account, I would suggest that you get yourself a R15 once off prepaid 1GB local only account and then simply route the FreeZone traffic via that account.

This way you'll have uncapped + FreeZone access at the same time :D

IIRC one of the Steam content servers of WebAfrica falls under the FreeZone. You can use like my Traffic Splitter application to do this.

I already have a bunch of routes which I've saved as WAGE. Here's my current list that I have, and I would appreciate it very much if someone could confirm the list of FreeZone/WAGE IP addresses:
Code:
# WAGE: 41.185.60.0-41.185.60.127 & 41.185.
# - Game servers found at http://www.wage.co.za/games/status
# - steam.wa.co.za
41.185.60.0,255.255.255.128

# steam2.wa.co.za: 41.185.24.21
41.185.24.21,255.255.255.255

# WA/WAGE FTP: ftp.wa.co.za
41.185.24.23,255.255.255.255

# ZA-News: zanews.co.za
41.185.16.112,255.255.255.248

This didnt really bother me because it never really worked for me.
Tried the setup like 4 times, even phoned and had WA help me set it up.
So now i just let my steam update from 12 - 6 :)

Funny thing is, I had issues in the beginning - even using using filtering software, some of my Steam usage came off my normal data bundle (and since I'm on a capped account I wasn't entirely happy). However, WA's always said that you use it at your own risk - I got the we're not refunding data reply as well - and that it wasn't fully supported.

Nowadays, I don't bother filtering, it all comes off my freezone anyways.
