Wet ADSL

Sup Peeps,

I’ve got a question (might be stupid) but does anyone else’s ADSL lines slow down when it rains?

My gaming was totally stuffed this weekend due to rain in Fourways.
More specifically does anyone here live in Fourways\Douglas dale area and have these problems.

My 4Mb line was giving me Ping results of 1053ms on speedtest.net and speeds of up to 600Kb. I did a test this AM and found that it all seems fine again. :(

It only seems to happen when it rains, suspect a leak into a cable?

My dad had the same problem. It would rain and his line would drop.

Just log a call with Telscum and tell them to sort it out. They fixed my dad's line up........eventually.

Yeah call has been logged, so will wait and see when someone shows up.

But I need to share me experience with you all...I LOLed myself onto the floor and then it turned from a LOL into a ROFL!

I called Telscum last night at around 19h30 (someone answered...amazing) explained this to them.

CARNaG3za: Hi, my 4MB ADSL line is giving me slow response times
Telkom: Ok sir, if your line is slow we can always upgrade it to a faster speed
CARNaG3za: Really? So you have something faster than a 4Mb line available?
Telkom: I’m not sure sir, I will have to check and get back to you.
CARNaG3za: LOL.....sound of body hitting wooden floor....ROFL!!!
Telkom: silent

Ok, Logging a call to telkom does not help, I logged a call last month, and the Techi that came out, on a "Sunny day" told me this(and it is true) : 4mb lines are very unstable when there is allot of Static electricity in the air(in thunderstorms and so on). So the Line drops Completely. He Advised me, to Call Telkom during a storm and ask them to drop the line speed to 2.5mb/s. between 1-2.5 your line will be the most stable. And after the thunderstorm call telkom again and tell them to up your speed back to 4mb.
If your Line runs under Ground this will not have such a big impact. But for those of us that have lines running Above ground it causes this problem.

I called Telkom this weekend, and after waitning 15min for them to pick up (this calling from a cellphone coz I use my line for Adsl only). The thunder was gone, and could keep on playing. Thus resulting me waisting time and money calling them. And to call them every time during Rainy weather and afterwards is not a solution. Why do they then sell you a 4mb line, that is almost completely down when it rains. Why not sell us then a 2.5 mb/s Stable connection?

Anothter funny thing tho, My Office is 800m away from my house, and we had our 1st line drop in 2 years on a sunny day??????But I must also say, the adsl lines at the office is running on 1mb and not 4 mb.

They might as well provide you with ur own online access to drop ur line and bring it back up.... because that call centre u sit and wait for 45min Minimum just to get to someone there

Soaked Lines

Yup I had similar problem on my line while still using dialup in the not too distant past. Noticed it after I got Infinity Call and would leave my connection on the whole weekend. The line would drop after it rained at random intervals. Logged the call a couple of times. After disconnecting all other telephone equipment except my laptop and testing, it was determined the problem was not in my house (duh!) Living in a extremely quiet environment (you can hear a ping drop :D) and upon close inspection I was able to hear a fizzing popping sound on the line at times, ussually after it had rained. Informed Telkom who investigated further (for quite some time). One day I saw them digging a huge pit near the SDC (green and blue box on the street) and they had huge pump with them. I can only imagine that the rain water was welling somewhere under the box probably immersing some cables in water because on another day they popped by for a test which checked out A-OK and did not menion a thing about their little operation on the street. When I asked them, they just shrugged their shoulders and said another team dealt with issue and they had idea what had happened there. Not that I cared coz from then on it was: Infintity and beyond...! Uh, scratch that. It was actually Infinity till Monday morning 7:00am...

Strange issue at my place. I've had my DSL since April / May. I allways leave my PC on during even EPIC thunderstorms, but lately, as in the last 2 weeks or so my line started doing the same thing. If it Rains or thunderstorms, I just kiss online goodbye, VERY unstable connection then. Weird that it never did that before. I know some ppl at the Tel of Kom and they have had a look at it for me, but no success as of yet.

Thanks peeps, thought I might have been the only person with this issue.
So with a crappy 4Mb infrastructure...let’s all welcome a worse 8Mb one.

I can't say I've experienced the problem myself before. Maybe I just didn't notice it. Next time it rains, I'll keep an eye out :p

It is noticeable.... your line drops, connection the nearest exchange is lost, so, your line needs to sync up again. by the time it sync'd it drops again.
That is what happens at my place when there is only a little thunder in the air....

Strange how we all just accept it :/

Well I spoze with all the bad service that we have gotten from Telscum in the past we just deal with it.

Just to add, i have a different problem when it rains my line is fine. But if someone phones my land line my connection just stops for 20 sec. It doesnt disconnect it just hangs or something, downloads fail if downloading with IE, if im online in a game i get dropped ect. I got Telsux out to have a look and they said my copper in the house is too old for them to work on 0o. So im left with a bad taste im my mouth every time the phone rings. :(

Pots Filter  i havnt seen people use those things in years  most routers have their own filters specifically designed for DSL routers and connections..... if i stand corrected Pots filters were orginally used on Dialup lines... you can just connect ur phone to the router and a cable from the phone to the wall.... if it has VOIP capabilities u will see the 2 ports on the phone.... and therefore its better that way :)

I have a netgear DG834 wireless, not sure if that is supported but i know if i remove the pots i cant sync my line.
