What age group should run our country?

With all the politics, it made me wonder, would the country be any different if run by lets say 20-27 year olds who didn't experience the full brunt of a broken country?
Do you think (with experience or teaching) that they would be able to turn the country around without all this crud about race?

Unfortunately I don't think it's about age. When looking at the News24 comments I see a lot of young people spewing hate at each other. I see a lot of support for people like Mugabe by young people and I honestly question their ability to think.

For instance, lets take Fivel. He is a bit older than many of us but I think he is quite wise and will probably run this country quite well.

So it's not about the age of our leaders but rather their mindset.

*blush* thank you.....

Agreed, I've seen very capable young folk who could easily run the country, as I've also seen older folk who never should be in a leadership position.

Issues of race are by no means limited to South Africa, they are all around the world. Our history makes it more prevalent in many of our discussions. This is also complicated by the fact that much of the inequality in our country is racially based.

I'm not convinced that young people should run the country. People do unwise things when they are young...but I do think that they should start preparing themselves to one day do that.

the simple reason as to why our government/politics are utterly broken is that the ANC knows full well that they will continue to win elections for the foreseeable future. there is ZERO threat to their grip on power, hence they continue to steal without fear of consequence.

Hence the reason i say Trained/ experienced. If a person in charge in our country is not worried about the racial problems in the past would it not make running the country a tad bit easier? I've also seen some from the older generations that could make excellent leaders. I also have a feeling that a party with younger members would possibly gain support due to the fact that the party (young and older) would be working to create a better future for those in the party?

i think the "age" aspect come sinto play with regards to the voters, rather than those running the country. We need young voters to start voting with their BRAINS and not their HEARTS! they need to vote based on what is happening right now, not what happened 20 years ago

OLD?! I never realised he was much older than most people on here? I just thought he had good taste in a movie I saw when I was still in pre-primary school...

Yeah he is like 80 and have grandchildren and stuff.

Hehe not really. I can't remember how old he is. I remember he was a little bit older than most of us.

I think intellectuals should run the country.

If you're the minister of education. You should have the necessary work experience.
If you're the minister of health. You should be a doctor.
Minister of finance = Have a PhD in business studies.
These people will have on hand experience and critical knowledge about the things they are responsible for. It's also an effective way of filtering out all the idiots.

It's embarassing for someone only passing grade 4 being able to run the country.

I have a school friend that works for the ANC and after the SONA debacle she said to me "Everyone over the age of 45 still have that mentality in their head and should not be working for goverment"

So there is still some hope

Hey, hey leave my grandkids out of this ;) I was born in 1968 if you really must know!

once again, the ANC does not choose posts based on ability, but rather on a "buddy buddy" system. why would they appoint somebody competent when there is zero repercussion in them hiring a pal who will give them some kickback in the future ? :( sorry, I guess i'm just a cynical old man with zero hope in the politics of our country

Personally I don't think it's about age but instead their history. Do they have a masters degree? Any corruption charges, criminal history, insolvency issues etc. Is there a history that the guy can run his own life etc.

It shouldn't be about how old you are or how badly you can dance.

Not all intellectuals are good people. Just keep that in mind.

I'd rather have practical people run the country. Intellectuals I wouldn't trust to do things in a straightforward uncomplicated manner.

I also agree that it shouldn't be about age. You don't even need the highest qualifications in the field. An understanding helps of course.

So basically we need an educated government without what happened in the past on their mind, they should focus mainly on the future/ or correcting wrongs from the past?
