I get what you're saying and I agree to an extent, but I kinda also see why ubi does it. They way I see it is that you are accessing someone's memory through technology and the only way to get 100% sync is to do exactly what they did originally, i.e. complete the mission in the exact same way that it "actually happened".
That makes sense, but I'm probably in the minority when I say that AC would be a better series if they hadn't included all the Animus stuff, and just had a series of "disconnected" games à la Far Cry. In the beginning it was really interesting. But especially in AC3, it was starting to bog down the game. I'm glad that the parts outside the Animus are rather good in Black Flag, but I still want to be able to play as Edward, not some random bloke who's reliving his memories.
It's only going to become more difficult to make the modern day sections good; resources which would be better put to use at making the rest of the game good. Many reviews that I've read have said that ACIV is a better pirate game then it is an assassin's game, and there's a reason for that.
