A bookshelf is always usefull, there's always crap lying around to put on it. For furniture you can be resourceful, for the last year my dining room table has been a old door resting on 2 beer crates :) btw bricks and planks make a good bookshelf.
Other tiny things that are SUPER usefull are things like plasters, headache tablets, tupper ware, bottle opener, can opener, tabbard (fuck I hate misqitos), doom, numbers of plumer/electrician/police, dish cloths (lots and lots), washline pegs (if you have a fashing machine), fan heater, vacuum cleaner, mop and spare bedding (for when a friends sleeping on the couch or its washing time)

Over the last couple of years I've managed to build up a collection of goodies, but not sure how much of it I'll keep when I eventually (if ever) stop studying. Moving crap is expensive but my esspreso/capiccino machine will stay with me forever.
 
As raven said, a proper toolkit, you will be surprised how often you will be using it ;D

The rest seems to be covered.

Seriously though, get a microwave. With a grill combo if possible.

You are also going to need someone who can read through and understand whichever rental contract you are given to sign. Generally it's not an issue, especially if you go through a reputable agency, but beware of private rentals. Some people will make you sign it with weird clauses in it.

And if its a flat ask the landlord for a rules list... it can sometimes be ridiculous...

The first flat I moved to, you couldn`t watch tv at certain times, braai outside, or wash your car.

Yeah I will just go buy the tool I need for the job at hand, and so my collection of tools would grow.

Pretty much what's in your house at the moment... that's what you need. Also remember tools, air freshener, cleaning materials, plastic bags... You'll find it's the random stuff that you always need the most.

Dude, be very careful when it comes to who you rent from. An argument between an owner and myself almost once came to fisticuffs over a promised paint job and repairs before I moved in that was not done when I eventually did move in. And, as the tenant there's actually not much you can do if an owner doesn't want to help. Rental agencies will put pressure on the owner if your request is valid.

Also, if you are renting through an agency, do your homework or ask people who they are renting through and what their experience is/was. Some rental agencies love your money and the commission they make but do nothing in return.

Good ones to rent through is AIDA and Remax.

One to definitely steer way clear of is Just Letting.

They once phoned me, asking about due rent... which I paid on the Friday at the end of the month. The lady I spoke to was too thick to understand that I already paid, but online banking sometimes take 3 days over the weekend. Insisted that I pay the rent, even after I explained it to her.

"But you are supposed to pay at the end of the month"

Contractually I had up to the 5th working day to pay

Also, forget about getting your deposit back with them.
