Is VR the next gaming frontier?

So with the frontier of the previous console generation being the jump to HD resolutions and a much more robust online community.

What do you think is the next frontier that console manufacturers and devs have as a challenge for this generation?

Is it virtual reality?

Is it an even higher pixel density of 4K? A wider aspect ratio?

Anyone else I haven't mentioned that you think may be the new gimmick with this generation?

The next frontier would almost be like a complete emergance of the body into lets say gel type substance for a full body experience. :D

Has anyone actually seen the difference between 4K and 1080P? How significant is the difference?

I would think you need a 4k monitor to really see any difference. I tried to but it didn't look different but its not a 4k monitor.

Yeah i'll skip on the whole Rift and VR scene with my motion sickness it doesn't go well :( but i'm excited to wee where it's all moving though.

By VR (Virtual Reality) do we mean things like Oculus and Morpheus?

I don't think it'll kick off well, at least it may be a slow steady stream into gaming, but I don't think it'll boom! I know I for one don't wanna be sitting in my living room or at my computer with a big ass set of goggles on my head looking like a knob while flailing my arms about. Sure it'll be a nice to have and kind of a niche but I don't think it's gonna become mainstream.

Man after watching that Microsoft concept video on AR, that really has got me sold! I think VR will follow the same route as 3d TVs, great gimmick but that's all it is.

Sadly I agree with this. Would love to see VR take off.

I reckon the next step is AR. Suddenly ur living room becomes a battlefield!

See that sounds great as a concept, But it just isn't practical for actual games, sure there will be some really cool stuff, like the Kinect was, but there was never really a proper AAA game that was amazing for that. I don't think this idea of having to move your body always to play a game will take off. It's really fun for a bit, or in a group, but its not something you can sink hours into and seems a bit gimmicky.

It's going to be awesome to see where VR/AR goes, as far as AAA capabilities I think VR is ahead in the race, if they can get that right it could be the next big thing.

I can see AR being used more for general "convenience" use and things that will seem really cool as a concept. They need to make the headset much smaller for it to be used in every day life. Something like hololense + google glasses.

Well take something like this for example. And I was actually speaking to Eugene about it last night.

I have a steering wheel for my PC and for all the racing games that I own. And it really does work well and feel great when used. But when it's not being used it's stored under the desk or in the cupboard gathering dust. Now when we choose to play said game(s) we don't bother to take it out and connect it up, because it's a schlep so instead we just make use of the ever so convenient Xbox controller.

I know this might seem like a stupid example but the implantation remains the same. At first it's great and all but in the end, it's a niche, a nice to have. Much like a 3D TV. Great to show off and take part in once in a while, but after that it becomes tiresome. But this is just my opinion...

I'm with you on that one. The problem is that you have to balance immersion with ease of access and availability.

VR is also one of those things that you have to completely formulate a game idea around to make it viable. As opposed to something like he inception of hd which was something that any game could take advantage of

I love racing games vr seems a perfect fit just imagine racing around the nurburgring it will be life changing I have no doubt that Gt7 will utilize sony vr device in some way.

the problem I have with VR is technically its not really virtual reality, but more an Imax feel right on ur face. Also the applications for this sort of tech will be really limited, where as Augmented reality lives up to its name and the practical applications have further capabilities for daily life and gaming. AR for me takes a city centre and suddenly turns it into a zombie apocalypse or takes a game like Ingress and turns it into a "real life" domination style game. VR is a forced version of the 3d TV's and I fear will share the same fate.

Just imagine an AR version of CoD or Battlefield, it will basically be a bunch of people running around in lazer tag outfits falling over imaginary obstacles :)
