Which console to get

Ok, so I'm actually (finally) thinking of getting a console. Personally, I prefer PC, but you get these console-only titles & exclusives of which some of them I'm interested. So basically I'm saving up some eBucks but seeing that I don't know anything about consoles, I thought I'd ask you guys?

Xbox or PS3?

I was originally leaning toward Xbox, but then they announced that Alan Wake will be released for PC... so now I'm pretty clueless.
Since I'm on the topic, I've commonly heard people talking about XBox Live and PS Network... some sort of subscription service? What exactly is that for?

If you are going to play games on the console a lot, then XBox is probably best(that's what people say). If you want to do a bit more, then the PS3 offers you all the extras (BluRay, easy DLNA, more).

This thread is gonna get nasty....

I say look at the titles. Most titles are multi-platform so the deciding factor is the exclusives. Like TBlaar said PS3 gives you bluray while Xbox gives you a very good multiplayer platform. I have both and use both equally.

i own both consoles, so allow me to give you my unbiased opinion. I think that the XBOX is still the best console to buy. This, coming from a former SONY die-hard! I have owned the PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3. I would not have touched the original xbox in a million years coz in my mind, it was a rubbish microshaft product. But the xbox360 is just brilliant.

If you compare the vast number of cross-platform titles released over the past few years, you will find that the vast majority are superior on the xbox. I also prefer the controller, which has more weight and the split analogs are more comfortable.

finally, to answer your question regarding the online services, this is the nail in the coffin of the PS3 offering. the PSN is a very poor cousin compared to XBOX LIVE. the only benefit being that its free, but considering that a 14 month subscription to xbox live only costs about R265, its not a major issue. the voice chat on the PSN is abysmal and there is not "party chat" facility. the xbox LIVE service allows you to chat to you buddies while each of you is playing a different game.

the only real advantage the ps3 has over xbox is the blu-ray player. but if you looking for advantages in every other area, go with the xbox.

Nicely put Hiro...

Now I also know why people prefer the XBox for online gaming, didn't even know about the chat fails on PSN.

Oh yeah, the reason why the XBox controller weighs more though, is because of the 2 x AA batteries that it uses. They should have thought about standardising these with rechargeable internal batteries like the PS3 controller, but I am sure they will in the next console.

What Hiro said, although just to complicate matters, I'll just add : PS3 exclusives > Xbox exclusives

Get the new Alienware Console :p

hehe, thats why i have the PS3 as my secondary console, for playing Uncharted :-)

actually, i don't use AA's in the controller, but rather a rechargeable battery pack

this is a very difficult decision I too own both ps3 and xbox but I prefer my ps3 again.........

I say you need to make a list of the exclusive games and then see which ones you would prefer playing

ARE you big into online gaming ?

ARE you planning on playing online with the console ?

Cross chat is cool but chatting in general is a slight irritation for me theres just too much gibberish been spoken anyway and you hear peoples dogs barking in the background or their wives moaning at them 90% of the time I just mute all the players, if i wanna speak to a buddy just phone him

Guys also never mentioned PSN + which is the paid service for PSN where you get free games every month and should your console die all your saves are located on the server

It all comes down to exclusives and which genre's you plan on playing

Wow, I expected way more fanboyism in this thread. I must second all the stuff that Hiro said. I've also got both consoles, and I way prefer my xbox to my ps3 for the gaming. The PS is mostly used as a media center and blu-ray player, and for PS3 exclusives. The XBox is my gaming console of choice. And if you want to play online, XBL is definitely superior. And the PS3 controller makes my hands cramp

Don't get me wrong, they are both fantastic consoles, and equally worth getting, for various reasons, the XBox is just my personal favourite.

Thanks for the replies.

I think the fanboyism is more applicable in PC vs Console and not so much console vs console.

I'm not really into online play... I prefer great single player titles with good story, etc. Except for Portal 2 and Duke, I only recently played Unreal again online, will start playing Starcraft 2 this weekend and ME3 in March but that is pretty much as far as my online play goes.

Are the prices for the games approx. the same? And do the price drop to approx. the same as titles get older?

Like everyone said it's simply a matter of the games you want to play. I almost bought an Xbox myself, but the deciding factor was the exclusives I wanted to play on PS3, Uncharted, God Of War, etc.

Prices for both console game are identical, only varying when retailers or online stores are having specials.

Get what ever console most of your mates have, since that is where you will get the best value out of it.
Some games are also more favored on one console over another. For example it is easier to get local only Cod Lobbies together on Xbox vs PS3 due to party chat system.

So if you are going to play a lot of COD, Xbox would be the way to go.
If you are going to be playing more exclusive games and single player games (especially new IP's) then PS3 has it hands down.

Personally these days I prefer my PC for gaming.
HTPC for Media and I have a 360 and a PS3 for the exclusives they have.

2012 is looking a bit dry on the games I want on each console however. So far it is Halo4 on 360 and The Last of Us on PS3.

So the other question you have to ask yourself, what 6 games would I like to play. Then pick the console that has the majority (or all) of those 6 on offer) and go with that one (keeping your online buddies in mind).

There is a 3rd consideration to keep in mind, accessories. The Xbox 250 gig comes with a headset, PS3 does not, (but any usb or blutooth one would work on PS3.) Same as steering wheels etc. Most USB stuff work on PS3, you will need to get Xbox specific stuff for the 360.

So if you all ready have a lot of money tied up in plastic extras...

Happy shopping.

Pretty much, yes (+- R600 for a new release). You also get Platinum for PS3 and Classics for Xbox rereleases.

One other thing to keep in mind.

All PS3 games are region free. (bluray movies are not, go figure).

So any import PS3 game will work, Xbox you need to import PAL region (or go look up and see if it is Region free).
