Why do people like Diablo?

In my experience on local and international servers, for alota people the ultimate goal was duelling and to be the best you had to spend the hours to have the best chars and the best items etc :P Hopefully diablo 3 can keep that going !

Hopefully the characters wont be as hackable as Diablo 2. Level 99 Barbarians with infinite resistance disgusted my sorceress. :-/

Honestly, I remembered having HOURS of fun with friends. Starting a new game almost every weekend, all of use with different classes. It was awesome!

Recently I tried playing it again (as it is all that will work on my laptop). It was ... AWFUL! Boring, repetitive and had no relevant story, something I demand from any game I play nowadays.
It was good back when, but I think the gaming scene/industry has changed a lot and gamers want something else now. Something different from What Diablo 2 offered.

i think lan and online has its pro's and cons... but i miss a good lan... i sold my pc a few moths ago...but before that there was not really anything to lan... except dota(and other warcaft maps) cod 5 zombies... that was it... its really sad that everyone has to have a internet connection to play... sigh! i would like a fast internet connection and want my friends to have it aswell but not all can do that... there is just less cost involve in a lan at the end of the day... and that is what makes a lan... :)

Couldn't have said it better! Lan is the highlite of my gaming life! Haha but its just not the same anymore...:(

mr P: you have played to many new games... i really dont think you will enjoy it... its like playing HL 1 if you have played HL2 good game but its just to old

I would call myself a casual gamer... and I guess I only game because my bf is a gamer. Last year he was shocked to hear that I've never played Diablo, and immediately got his dusty diablo 2 cd of of his cupboard... so we played it and I must admit I loved it!

I played a sorcie and chain lightning'd the crap out of everything!!! It's really an awesome game, especially when you jam with friends. I plan to play a female wizard in D3 :) ... hope to see you guys ingame! ;P

i stand corrected :-)

I casually played D2 and it was just, sick.. And playing with friends, you can sit and play it for hours on end. The whole online thing, unfortunately, it's the future of gaming.. and now LAN these days will be complete without an internet connection lets be honest. One thing that worries me is they seem to be making D3 a bit too WoW like, lets hope it doesn't ruin it.

Well I haven't found another game that has the whole Demon's and Devil's thing. Other rpg's i find to be more monotonous when its the same monsters as the next game. If there are any other games that I don't know that are like Diablo's demons etc then don't tell me as it will take away from my appeal of the game.
I like the looting of it.
I like the grimness of the game.
I love gothic age games with swords and magic and crap.
Plus Diablo are really well made games.

Hot topic, I know but I've never really gotten the appeal. Finished the first one as a kid, the second was much of the same but I could be a Necro (YAY!) annnd really, it was just a big grind (being hack-and-slash, after all).

I've read a thousand comments by people obsessing over loot, but zero about story (not that story was ever a significant part of any hack-and-slash).

Anyone who's read my rants over the years knows that I'm about as "into" the hack-and-slash genre of RPGs as I am to having a tooth pulled. To me, it's a much more rewarding experience seeing the culmination of your actions and choices throughout a game than I am in grinding monsters for loot to grind more monsters.

So, yes, what do people like about Diablo? What's the big fuss about? Each time I read or hear anything about "Diablo" my brain slips into idle and the first thing I think about is its utter monotony.

Disclaimer: I'm genuinely interested in knowing more. This is not a troll thread :p

Like WOW Diablo uses Skinner Box techniques to keep players hooked, they are drawn in by good, solid, fun mechanics and then its "maybe this time I'll get that Green-whatever- i was looking for. Just one more level...
While playing D2 originally i found it fun putting my own story in. Gave my Amazon companion a name and pretended her and my barbarian where close. Gave it new meaning, haven't been able to play again though....

A buddy of mine introduced me to the game and it is also not his type of game. What hooked me on Diablo was the customisation and building of your character as well as playing around with the different skills/characters. Then there is the loot too! I guess what made Diablo so popular was that it was the first action hack 'n slash game.

dungeon siege was ok... i have yet to play DS 3

I'm just in love with the whole idea of better loot, stats, etc.
progression is what keeps me playing, wanting to make my char stronger
and try to get that ultimate weapon

to be honest I only started playing Diablo 2 because I started lanning with friends. The idea of taking on the hordes of hell with my best mates was just amazing. I imagine its a similar feeling to people raiding daily in games like WoW.

The fact that everytime time we finished it together we usually had better gear was just a bonus. It was more fun than sitting for 12 hours at a lan playing CS or Quake ;)

i agree TRIV... its just sad to think that lanning is become something of the past...in more and more of the new games comming.. :(

It is sad but at the sametime we didn't have the pressures back then that we do now. I cannot leave my wife and daughter alone at home to go LAN all night, however if I'm on teamspeak I can play all night with my mate's online without leaving the comfort of my home :D

that is a very GOOD point... is suppose it getting that balance at the end of the day.. :)

Ofc you can :D just tell them you're going drinking or something. Assert your dominance :D
