Guys please no fanboys, I want to get a new console i prefer xbox controllers and had a xbox 360. The console i want will be used for media in the lounge but also used for the casual single player game just to chill when bored, i've heard all kinds of conflicting reports from people from xbox cant do 1080p to ps4 cant play flv's and has shit media capabilities... hoping you guys can dispel the myths and give valid reasons why you would chose the one over the other
 
Disclaimer: I'm an XBox One owner.

I'd say first of all go have a look at what exclusives are available and coming for each console and see if there are particular ones you'd like to play. That's a fairly important step. I'm going to say that I actually like the PS4 exclusives more than the XBox One ones.

However, since you want to use it for a media player then the XBox One apparently wins in that apartment. We use it a lot for media and it works great. Especially streaming from your computer is awesome.

Then XBox One games are also cheaper than PS4 games and there's a large amount of casual games available in the online shop.

The PS4 is a more powerful machine. So some games run on 1080p on the PS4 and other resolutions on the XBox One.

Either way you can't go wrong with whatever choice you make. Personally I'd say the XBox One would suit you better with your mention of your previous console, media and casual games at times.

Personally, Im leaning towards the PS4. The XB1's E3 launch just ruined it for me. I also see a lot of second hand PS4 games for sale everywhere which tells me there is a large user base here in SA which is a real good thing. the second hand games are also selling for below R200 so you could get a decent collection going in no time.

That's a good point. I also see more PS4 games on the secondhand shelves than XBox One games.

Something that I forgot to mention is backwards compatibility. The XBox One will play some 360 games and the list is growing every day. And on Gold you get 2 free XBox One games a month and 2 free 360 games. All that are playable on the XBox One.

You make a great point about second hand games there clearly is a lot more people with ps4 in the country and I feel a lot of people dont give credit to the ps4 os.I mean you put a game in and you playing in no time while your patches download in the backround but it all comes down to what you really want in your heart just follow your gut feeling.

I used to own a xb360. I love the xbox controller. BUT, the PS4 is a superior machine.
Yes, XBone makes for an excellent media center, but the PS4 media player works just fine.
plus when you get the PS4 (which is also cheaper afaik) you can play Destiny with us :D
 
I have a PS4, absolutely loving it.

Heard someone say the other day:

Someone here at MyGaming used to own an XBox One then heard all the amazing things about the PS4 so the person sold his XBox One and got a PS4. He quickly realised his mistake and got an XBox One again. :)

I thought it was [MENTION=6464]XbatousaiX[/MENTION] but if it's not him then I can't remember who it was. Will have to search to see.

As some one who owns a PS4, played on a XBONE fore more than 30 hours, and as an honest opinion.

If you owned a XB360, get the One
If you owned a PS3 get the 4.
If you never owned a console, get the PS4.

As a Media player the PS4 has a media player function but it's slightly limited at the moment.

Also, internal subs do not work, while external do. They have to be SRT format in order to work, I will test with .SUB .ASS and a few other formats.

I owned a 360 and played the XBone quite a bit and still prefer my PS4. it just.... plays better

Like Destiny for example. I hate playing shooters on console. played it on the XBone, sucked ass at it and hated console shooters even more. got it on the PS4 and sucked a lot less and grown to love the game. it just plays so much better on the PS4. it feels smoother, more comfortable. even grown to like the PS4 controller.

I also found the ONE's UI is blatantly designed to sell DLC and extra stuff for games. Where as PS4 when you check the details of the game, it switches between DLC and what friends have been doing in the game and in other games.

I always say the ONE is a media player with gaming functions and, the 4 is a gaming console with media functions.
