I have a PC, I don't care about which console "wins". :p

I have a PC aswell... my bro has an XBOX 360...

I've owned a PS1 and a PC at the same time. PC was better.
I've owned a PS2 and a PC at the same time. PC was better.
I own a PS3 and a PC at the same time. PC still is better.

I already know that even if I did own a PS4 that my PC would still be better. It is however just my own preference and quite honestly when the right games (usually exclusives) come along then I'll be all too happy to consider a new console...because it's about the games in the end and I'm sure we'd all want to enjoy as many as possible on as many platforms as possible (time, money and will provided of course).

As for which one is better? I don't really mind too much but I think it's pretty obvious which one I'd choose to own personally (unless that lotto pays out...in which case I'll buy One).

Shit, sorry guys. I've worked over 20 hours this weekend alone.

Will get to it probably by tomorrow. Sorry Tom.

Ok guys. I am going to try and give my best opinion as possible, this has been difficult for me. I've had so much stuff going through my head and thoughts with regards to this. I want to try and deliver both consoles in a neutral light and to not be biased in any means. I enjoy both consoles and my PC, I am a gamer and have bought both consoles for different reasons, this is what I'll try and explain.

Alraait... I am going to start off by saying this, since getting my XO I have hardly played on PS4. This is not due to not preferring it or anything, just the fact that I am a Forza fan and have been stuck in those games exclusively. I bought a PS4 as a bday prezzie to myself as I would have bought one anyway when Bloodborne releases. I did not plan to purchase an XO and did not budget for it. I bought it on credit and it was literally a spur of the moment thing, and mostly cos I had to have Forza.

I am not concerned over FPS, or minor differences in resolutions. I have seen and read all the articles/videos on PS4 vs Xbone. Framerate differences are the least of my concern. I buy games for the enjoyment of gaming, and the experience. And really, who cares about a difference of 900p vs 1080p.

One thing the PS4 does well is gaming and does it well, let's face it. That's what it's made for and that's what it's target audience is all about. The system is simple, startup > select a game > play game. You can tell the system is made with this in mind.
This is where the main differences are, the XO is developed around the purpose of not only being a gaming machine, but an entertainment system. It took me 5min to get my Win8 machine to stream media to XO, whether it be music or movies. The apps that accompany the dashboard are pleasant. I can watch YouTube on it for goodness sake, or watch some ossim GoPro vids, hell, I can even Skype on it. Unfortunately I can't comment on the Kinect but I do look forward to getting it. I loved my Kinect on 360 and think it's a fantastic piece of technology. From what I've read it even works in complete darkness!
The GUI (dashboard) of the XO is clean and intuitive. It just seems to flow and you can customize it somewhat. The PS4 user interface feels a little more like a blind date. A little awkward and clunky. Feels like you're trying to put in the Konami code compare to how smooth the XO is. Granted I look forward to the pleasant change of the 2.0 update on PS4 which see DLNA support.

To anyone wanting to buy a console, Xbox One or PS4. Don't get too rattled up in technical specs and FPS. Buy a console based on the games you want to play, specifically exclusives. This should be the selling point for the console.
I bought PS4 for Bloodborne, I am a Souls' fan and it's the only games I still have on PS3. I bought The Last of Us again because this is one of those games you have to own if you have a PS4. Driveclub is another one.
I bought the XO purely for Forza5 and Forza Horizon 2, then pre-ordered Halo Master Chief Collection because I've never played a Halo game. I have subsequently pre-ordered Sunset Overdrive as well.
This is my point, buy a console for the games you want to have/own/play.

Pros; The Xbox is perfect for that Sunday couch lounging. Play a game, watch some movies, chill to music then game some more. It also helps that the controller is so comfortable, so comfortable! The console starts up ridiculously fast too and is practically silent.
PS4 is great for more hardcore gaming, along with it's exclusive titles. A great console in it's on right.

Cons; I am unfortunately one of those people affected by the Xbox One noise issue. Microsoft have already said they will replace the console and they will organize couriers etc. It almost sounds like a Hard Drive and MS is going with the statement that this could be caused by the couriers when shipping the units.
I have had an issue or two with the PS4 where you switch it on an only get a pulsing white light with no display. This supposedly happens when the console doesn't detect a display output.

I realize I shoot back and forth, but I'm putting things down as they come to mind. Please, if you have any other questions lets keep this going. I hope I managed to help anyone that might be considering getting a current-gen console.

Peace out...

Peace out...

Awesome write up, with some very well put points ;)

The thing that i found most interesting is what you say about the XO user interface compared to the PS... I love the PS UI... I think it does everything it should, and it does it well "whistling:

You now have me wanting to see how the XO UI works...

I also cant wait for the DLNA support patch for PS4, but in all honesty this is my biggest gripe with the PS4... Why it never came standard with the initial software i will never understand... And nearly a year down the line we still dont have it? Seriously?

Im not in a position to have more than one console in the home, so for me the PS4 is it... Im really looking forward to the 2015 lineup, Bloodborn looked incredible at Rage, as did The Order... I really enjoyed the look of XO Sunset overdrive, really looks incredibly fun... But all in all i think we have some good things coming our way...

I just hope I was able to help.

Ok so i now realize how unfair it was to actually expect an answer of which is the better console...

Had a mate around at my place yesterday and he brought along his shiny new X-Box 1... So here are my comments

At first look, the X-1 is huge... and next to the PS4 is really is considerably bigger... But its still a great looking machine that will blend in really well with all other devices you have in a normal TV set up... The X-1 has considerably more going on at the back. Im assuming most of this is because of the "DSTV" integration etc... the is an HDMI in and an HDMI out which i thought was pretty interesting...

As much as I love the PS4 control, the X-1 control is as comfortable in the hand, if not even more... I think that its because im used to PS but the remote at first felt very clunky, and it takes up a lot of space in the hand... Im also not a fan of the positioning of the joy sticks, but again probably because im used to PS, so i put that down to personal preference...

In the Set up, both are as easy as you would expect to set up, literally just plug in the power, plug in the HDMI and your gaming literally in minutes... One thing i found incredibly strange, is that the X-1 only saves your save game files in the cloud... So my mate didn't want to connect to my home wifi because he had issues setting up his at home, and because of this we couldn't access any of his saves, so I don't think they are stored on the actual console? Will need someone to clarify this though... (Beo this is directed at you)

The UI... As much as i have no problems with the PS4 UI, I have to give this one to X-1, and only because on the PS4 you have a "ribbon" that you cycle through from left to right, on the X-1 its more of a windows 8 feel, with the boxes, and the main difference being you can navigate left right and up and down... so not really ground breaking, but it does have a nicer feel to it...

So at the end of the day what it all comes down to... Is the Graphics... And as much as i would like to say the PS4 was better... There was not even a slight visible difference for me. Fifa was the only game we both had to compare, and there is seriously not one iota of a difference.

So in my opinion, what it comes down to is 100% personal preference... The differences are so small, and so inconsequential i can honestly not say that one is better than the other... Remotes and Exclusives... that's how I would advise someone looking to get one of the new consoles to base their decision on...

Great write up, thanks Tom.

My complimentary two week pass expired a little while ago. And I could still load my saves despite not being Gold. The only difference Gold does is sync your saves to cloud. So that in the event you don't have access, it should redirect to the offline copy. As far as I understand, this is how it works (or should). Granted I still had internet access when I was no longer a Gold subscriber, I just noticed that it no longer synced.

Maybe tonight I'll give this a bash, turn off my router and see what happens when loading a game....

I wonder if the cloud saving works the same way as it does on the XBox 360. As a Gold subscriber, I get the choice to save my games to my hard drive or the cloud (the cloud appears as an extra storage device). If I save a game to the cloud, I can't load it if I'm offline, only hdd saves. You can access the cloud saves from any 360 console where you sign in with your account though. You can also copy or move your saves from the hdd to the cloud or vice versa. The one thing that I think they should have done though is to keep a local copy of the save on the hdd, and upload it when you go online, I was hoping that they would sort that out with the XB1 (maybe they have with the syncing thing...)

In contrast, with the PS3, all my saves are local, but as a PS+ subscriber I get the option for it to back my saves up to the cloud on a daily schedule, which I actually prefer because my saves are safe on the cloud, but I can still play when I don't have internet connection or if the PSN is down or anything like that.

Well this is one thing I've noticed... It has not asked me where I would like to save games, not have I set anything like this up where I've specified. But every time I start up FH2 it synchronizes. I will check tonight actually and let you guys know.

I started up my console without any Internet and started Horizon 2. It remembered my progress and continued like normal.

Only thing it did was ask who was playing, and I thus chose my profile. That's the only difference.

Anybody downplaying the power difference between the consoles has been playing the wrong games there is a clear winner in that regard but a console should really be bought for what exclusives you prefer and I prefer Sony's exclusives simple as that.

You may be correct here, but from my experience with Fifa 15 the difference is so slight that I couldnt definitively say one is better than the other... Maybe this would be different with other games, I dont know? But I do believe the exclusives are what it comes down to... And the exclusives on both consoles look fantastic...

Please, let's not start this into a flame thread.

Each console is great in their own rights. I do not believe that ones hardware is significantly better or superior over the other.
If you look at Forza 5, 1080p @ 60fps solid - Forza Horizon 2 1080p @ 30fps solid

Then we go to things like Assassins Creed Unity where both consoles are capped at 30fps if I'm not mistaken. People continue to bitch about XO because it runs this game at 900p but the PS4 will run it at 1080 warra warra fish paste.... let's not forget that The Order is still coming for the PS4 and that is running at 900p if I am correct.

It all comes down to deciding what games you want, and which you want to play and the going for the respective console. If you like the ideas of each ones exclusives, then get both as I did.

Though I will say this... a recent deciding factor for me is now becoming the controller, and how this will be used within the game. As I feel the XO controller is better or more comfortable, at least for me (personal preference).
