I think it's because people don't see words as constructs - in the case of "definitely", for example, it's the prefix de- plus the stem -finite- plus the (adverbial) suffix -ly. De+finite+ly. Yet some people just don't seem to see this at all. As for "alot". >_> That just doesn't even make sense.
