The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a remarkable fusion of a beautifully detailed open world with deep storytelling that has me replaying it time after time.
You play as Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher on a quest to locate his adopted daughter, Ciri.
Along the way, however, you’ll have to do the job of a Witcher – killing monsters.
Undeniably, the two main aspects that have me revisit Geralt in his odyssey are rich storytelling and satisfying combat.
Choices make the world go round
“Spoiled for choice” takes on a whole new meaning in the Witcher 3.
Quests often branch out in multiple storylines, depending on your choice.
Each choice you make influences the next available set of options and the story’s overall direction.
It is all up to you.
You don’t feel like helping an NPC you met in a main quest out with that favour they mentioned? Then don’t, but be warned that it could alter your story as you progress.
This massive branching storyline is one of the reasons why I have completed the game three times already, and yet I still make discoveries with each playthrough.
Know thy enemy
The Witcher 3 gives the player the unique opportunity to prepare for the enemy you will face.
Witcher contracts are a beautiful example of this – missions in which you hunt down powerful monsters.
The following monster classes are found within the game:
-
- Necrophages
- Specters
- Beasts
- Cursed Ones
- Hybrids
- Insectoids
- Elementa
- Relicts
- Ogroids
- Draconids
- Vampires
- Good ol’ Humans
The bestiary is vital in helping you prepare to face these enemies.
Before facing a monster, you can study up on its unique characteristics and weaknesses. This includes the blade oils, bombs, and magic most effective against a particular creature.
It is hard to explain the satisfaction that comes with hunting down a monster, striking the killing blow, and riding back to the village with the creature’s head strapped to your horse.
I haven’t tired of doing this after nearly 80 hours of gameplay, and I’ve got many more hours ahead of me.
