Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the biggest titles of 2021; however, it failed to meet the launch expectations of Square Enix.

Despite winning the Best Narrative Game of 2021 at The Game Awards and scoring a consistently high review rating from both gamers and critics, the Marvel game underperformed on its release.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy focuses on the story of Star-Lord (Peter Quill) as he leads his ragtag group.

“Despite strong reviews, the game’s sales on launch undershot our initial expectations,” said Square Enix in its mid-year financial results report.

However, the developer also indicated that there was a growth in sales in the months that followed the launch, and that initiatives implemented by Square Enix likewise gave rise to higher revenue.

Square Enix indicated that it intended to continue with these initiatives to ensure that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy makes up for its slow start.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is an action-adventure single-player game currently available on consoles and Steam – its trailer can be watched below.
