The release of Diablo Immortal has, for many gamers, left a sour taste in the mouth and cast several doubts over Diablo 4 and its expected release in 2023.
Rod Fergusson, an overseer for the development of Diablo 4, tweeted that the next game in the series won’t be pay to win.
He states that the game will be built to deliver a wide breadth of content both at launch and after with the only microtransactions being present in cosmetics and full, story-driven expansions.
To be clear, D4 is a full price game built for PC/PS/Xbox audiences. We are committed to delivering an incredible breadth of content after launch, for years to come, anchored around optional cosmetic items & full story driven expansions. More details soon. Necro blog tomorrow!

This tweet, while encouraging, should however be taken with a grain of salt as Diablo Immortal had a similar marketing campaign indicating it would have minimal micro-transactions – yet the opposite is true.
While Diablo Immortal may now be one of the lowest-rated games ever on Metacritic, soundly beating titles like Warcraft 3: Reforged, it has still generated a massive amount of revenue for Blizzard so it’s possible Diablo 4 may go down the same path despite the outcry.
However, for the time being, the tweet from Fergusson is a hopeful step in the right direction.
