Naughty Dog to “raise the bar” with The Last Of Us

15 January 2012

In a preview snippet of Edge Magazine’s upcoming feature on The Last Of Us, some commentary was given by game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann – in which they say their goal with The Last Of Us is to “change the fucking industry.”

We’re not swearing, we’re quoting someone who was swearing.

The PlayStation 3 exclusive title was debuted at last year’s Spike VGAs as the ‘big reveal no one saw coming’ – and really, no one saw it coming. We have since learned that the game follows Joel, a beardy man in his 40s, and his 14-year-old travelling companion Ellie, as they fight to survive a world that has been decimated by a fungal virus.

The debut trailer for the game also showed us some scary fungal man-moster things, which Druckmann and Straley want gamers to know are simply not the focus of the game.

“We’re not going for horror,” said Druckmann, “There’s going to be horrific things happening in this game, but that’s not the focus of it. The monsters aren’t the focus of it. It’s the relationship between Joel and Ellie.”

“We’re trying to say something about human beings and how they exist. Not necessarily just in this setting, but in every setting.”

When you look at Naughty Dog‘s other successful franchise, Uncharted, you can’t help but gawk at the level of polish they apply to their games – something which is sure to be part of The Last Of Us.

This time around, though, they’re really hoping you all will appreciate the characters and the relationships between them, more than the flashy layers of paint, and cinematic flair.
