Last week we reported on the first local Radeon HD7970 prices. We spotted a Sapphire HD7970 for R7,933 on Prophecy.co.za, which is expensive enough to nauseate even the most die-hard PC enthusiast.
AMD South Africa’s sales manager Jaco Laubscher assured us that prices will come down as availability increases.
“Each distributor is doing their own thing based on demand and pricing is still way higher than I would like. Recommended retail price should be around R7,399,” said Laubscher.
Prophecy.co.za’s Paul Johnston echoed Laubscher, saying “That is an official price, although I think it will go down over time. The big price drop will be as we get more brands available – I’m expecting the cheapest cards to be in the R6,000 – R6,400 range.”
More cards, lower prices
Thankfully, we are already seeing this start to happen, and Prophecy has increased its stock on the HD7970 range by adding the Club 3D HD7970, which is selling for a more palatable R6,478.
Landmark PC is also now selling HD7970’s, and has the Sapphire card for R7,245. They also have the Club 3D HD7970 in stock for R6,154, making it the most affordable place to buy the card in SA right now.
Landmark also has the Asus version of the card for R7,998, as well as the XFX version for R7,755.
The card’s recommended retail price in the USA is $550 (R4,491).
