Madden NFL 10 looks too good to be true?

24 March 2009

A “Bullshot” is a screenshot that has been touched up in order to give the viewer the impression that a game’s visuals are far more impressive than they actually are. Unfortunately bullshots are becoming increasingly common inthe gaming industry, and EA Sports is no stranger to this sneaky marketing tactic.

It has gotten to the point that we have to take most screen shots with a handful of salt. Numerous times have we been disappointed when unwrapping a game, only to fire it up at home and realize that the actual in game visuals do not look as good as the promotional “in game screen shots” had us believe.

If there was any more clear an example of a bullshot, then it has to be this latest gem from EA Sports. The publisher yesterday released the first official screenshot for the latest in its hit NFL series, NFL 10.

Ok, so we cannot say with utter certainty that the screen shot has been touched up as we obviously have not seen the game in action. However, we find it very difficult to believe that the game will actually look as good as the screen shot would have us believe. After all, one would be forgiven for mistaking the shot for a photograph of an actual NFL match.

The level of detail, clarity and overall realism, not to mention the impressive use of motion blur and realistic lighting and shadows seem just a little bit too slick for anything we expect to see out of this generation of consoles.
