Yesterday evening, at the Game Developers Conference, Activision Blizzard announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is currently scheduled for release on November 10 2009.
The first-person war simulator series is undoubtedly one of the most popular recent video game franchises. Modern Warfare 2 is the follow up to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which was released late in 2007 to critical acclaim. Call of Duty 5: World at War was released in between, but is not considered a true sequel to Modern Warfare as it was made by a different developer.
While Call of Duty 5: World at War was released recently, it failed to shake Call of Duty 4 from its current spot as the worlds most popular online first person shooter. This is reflected in South Africa, with Call of Duty 4 possessing the strongest online community in terms of first person shooters.
Originally referred to as Call of Duty 6, Activision confirmed recently that the game will be officially titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, with no 6 to be found in the title.
Preceding the announcement was a teaser trailer posted on a new official Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 website.
Although we cannot confirm it at this stage, Joystiq.com has indicated that the “Call of Duty” part of the title may be left out in the final release, with Activision Blizzard opting to simply go with “Modern Warfare 2” as the full title in the promotional material. This would be a bit strange, as there no game with the official full title “Modern Warfare”. Apparently Infinity Ward is still “figuring it out”.
