In a press release yesterday Bethesda announced that it would be releasing a new Fallout game entitled Fallout: New Vegas.
Fallout: New Vegas will not be a sequel to Fallout 3. According to Bethesda, the new title will exist in the same world as Fallout 3, but will not necessarily be directly related to it. The most interesting thing about this announcement is that Bethesda is contracting Obsidian Entertainment to develop the title. This move has been met with mixed results from the community. On one hand, Obsidian is becoming known for releasing poor sequels to classic games, such as Neverwinter Nights 2 and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II.
On the other hand, Obsidian Entertainment was founded by ex Black Isle employees. Black Isle was the studio responsible for the original Fallout series which was an absolute classic.
Bethesda has been unable to provide too much detail at the moment, largely because they are pretty much giving Obsidian full reign in terms of the creative direction that Fallout: New Vegas will take. At this point, Bethesda would only confirm that New Vegas will definitely be an RPG, and will offer a similar experience as that of Fallout 3.
Apart from this announcement, Bethesda has recently been making headlines in its drive to secure the rights to all things Fallout, including a TV series, movie and an MMO. Bethesda confirmed to Shacknews in an interview that the process has largely been based on their desire to protect the world that they have created, and there are no immediate plans for a movie or television production.
Bethesda confirmed that Fallout: New Vegas will have no impact on the unannounced project currently in development at Bethesda. According to an announcement made earlier this year, Bethesda is working on another developer’s franchise. Guess the mystery franchise and win a free game with MyGaming.
