A number of forums around the world are on fire with rumors that Eidos is planning to announce a new addition to the popular Thief franchise. Last year Eidos announced Deus Ex 3, and went on to say that its next big announcement had something to do with a game starting with the letter T.
Also, according to a recent advertisement in Edge magazine, the new title is a sequel to a game which has appeared in GameSpot’s “Hall of Fame”, “Ten Best heroes of gaming” and “Greatest Games of all Time” lists. As was noted by forumites at Gamespot, there is only one game which makes all three of these lists, and that is Thief, which also happens to start with a “T”.
Eidos has refused to comment at this point in time, but can confirm that they will be announcing a new AAA title on May 11. If the clues given are true, then it cannot be anything other than Thief 4, which is hardly surprising since the game was met with critical acclaim as well as commercial success, and a fourth sequel is about due.
Thief: The Dark Project, Thief II: The Metal Age and Thief: Deadly Shadows made up the thief series between the years 1998 and 2004. Developed by Looking Glass Studios, Thief let players play the role of Garret, a thief who uses stealth and cunning to maneuver his way through a dark medieval steampunk world.
While we cannot say with utmost certainty that Eidos will announce Thief 4 come May 11, they certainly are providing strong indicators that this is the case. Watch this space for the official announcement.
