According to Fudzilla, Take-Two Interactive has offered the now defunct 3D Realms $30million for the intellectual property rights to Duke Nuke Forever.
While Take-Two possesses the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever, it appears that the publishing rights do not include direct access to the intellectual property developed up until this point. Take-Two is obviously eager to get a hold of the work that 3D Realms has done so far, so that it can have another developer finish it up and get it out on shelves.
In a somewhat maverick move from 3D Realm’s George Broussard, the ex 3D Realms co-owner refused the offer. Instead, Broussard is apparently in talks with other possible publishing candidates, including long time friends id Software who developed Quake and Doom, as well as Microsoft, Electronic Arts and Epic, who is responsible for Unreal and Gears of War.
Broussard is apparently trying to acquire funding so that he can finish developing the game with his own team. However, at this point, even if he does so, he will have to go through Take-Two who owns the publishing rights.
With Take-Two dead set on maintaining the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever, and 3D Realms maintaining the IP rights, the DNF fiasco seems to be becoming more complicated every day.
It remains to be seen if we will ever see this game released.
