Guiness World records has called Codemasters’ up and coming racing game FUEL the biggest console game ever made. The title status is in reference to FUEL’s in-game square millage which boasts 14400 square Kilometers of accessible terrain.
To put this in perspective, it is almost as big as Gauteng which spans 16 548 square kilometers.
To put it in perspective in relation to other games, FarCry2 takes place on a seemingly massive 50 square kilometer map, and Oblivion boasts 41 square Kilometers.
Granted these games do not involve very much high speed racing, so relative to human walking speed they are still quite huge.
Furthermore, it stands to reason that these maps are rendered with far more detail than what FUEL will offer, as players will spend more time taking in their surroundings with movement being slower.
FUEL on the other hand will have players speeding though most of the areas and therefore does not require as high levels of detail in the environment rendering.
However, it has to be said that 14000 square kilometers of explorable terrain is still quite an achievement.
FUEL is being billed as an open world racing game that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that has been ravaged by global warming. Codemasters has promised a full day-night cycle as well as dynamic and variying weather effects which will include tornados and hurricanes.
The Developer, Asobo Studio , has stated that there will be no loading times while racing from one point to another, and that there will be seventy different drivable vehicles divided amongst seven different vehicle classes; bikes, ATVs, muscle cars, SUVs, buggies, trucks and hovercrafts.
The game was finally given a release date yesterday and will be available internationally on June 2. It is currently scheduled for local release on June 12.
