Modern Warfare 2 will feature Call of Duty branding

10 July 2009

Originally titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the sequel to the immensely popular Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was then changed to a simpler Modern Warfare 2.

While dropping the “Call of Duty” title made the title less of a tongue twister, it was argued that it distanced the game from the very popular Call of Duty franchise.  Research findings compiled by International tracking firm OTX indicated that by dropping the Call of Duty name from Modern Warfare 2, Activision had effectively reduced the games brand profile awareness by 20%.

When tracking the game as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 OTX found that approximately 40% of gamers in the USA claimed that they had “heard of the title”. After shortening the name only 20% of gamers said the same thing.

These findings came shortly after Activision announced that they were hoping for Modern Warfare 2 to be the year’s biggest selling game, something that many believed was quite likely given the strength of the Call of Duty brand.

The research findings released by OTX seem to have hit home, as Activision has announced that the title will ship as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Yesterday Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward’s community manager, wrote on Twitter that he had “”Just recieved[sic] the first Modern Warfare 2 boxes straight off the press,”. The tweat was accompanied by an image of the box depicting the title using the Call of Duty branding.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on November 10 this year.
