Take-Two recently announced that it has roped in yet another developer in an effort to get Bioshock 2 onto shelves before the end of the year.
Arkane Studios, previously responsible for Dark Messiah: Of Might and Magic, has been brought on board to assist with the design, animation and art in Bioshock 2. This brings the number of developers involved in the project to four.
2K Australia and 2K Boston co-developed the original Bioshock, which was released in late 2008, so it’s not the first time that multiple studios have been working on the same project. 2K Marin took care of the initial game port to the PS3 so it could be fair to assume that they are doing the same this time around.
In addition Alyssa Finley, producer at 2K Marin, revealed recently that “we’ve been working closely with Digital Extremes for our robust multiplayer experience”. Digital Extremes has in the past been responsible for the likes of Unreal Tournament 2004, which arguably features one of the most widely enjoyed multiplayer platforms out there.
Finley also revealed that “Under the direction and leadership of 2K Marin, Arkane is assisting in the creation of levels that embody the aesthetic and gameplay ideals that make BioShock such a unique and exciting experience,”
Although it can be argued that too many cooks could spoil the broth there are many gamers out there that would support this multi faceted approach to game development. Being that Bioshock was received so favourably it might be difficult for just two studios to develop an even better offering the second time around.
