EA today announced that Battlefield Heroes, DICE’s free to play FPS, now has over one million subscribers and continues to grow considerably.
The game, which was launched in June, was the first of EA’s ‘Play 4 Free’ campaign whereby gamers download and play-for-free while revenue is generated through the placement of advertising within the game and micropayments for additional items.
Battlefield Heroes is also one of two attempts on DICE’s part to broaden the Battlefield franchise, Battlefield 1943 was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 earlier this month. The primary distinction between the two is that Battlefield Heroes is free and generates income through advertising while Battlefield 1943 will do so from copies sold.
According to Gamasutra, Heroes team general manager Ben Cousins commented that “The team is really proud to have hit one million registrations at this early stage. Creating a character and gameplay experience that is totally yours is what sets this game apart.”
Although Heroes makes its money from advertising, there is no advert placement in-game. Additionally the micropayments made for extra items do not give players an advantage over other gamers but rather let them customise their arsenal.
