Its official, June was the worst sales month for software in the videogames industry since September 2000. The month saw a 31% decline in game sales in comparison to the same month last year.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 managed to show healthy figures with the likes of Prototype and UFC 2009 taking the two top spots. Nintendo claimed ten out of the top twenty sales spots, and Sony’s highest entry is Fight Night Round 4 at number 7.
Nintendo continues to do well with its evergreen long-life titles such as Mario Kart and Wii Fit. The DS is also proving its worth, holding four of the top twenty spots after a full four years on the market.
Interestingly, Xbox 360 sales did particularly well compared to Wii sales in June, with Microsoft taking spots 1,2,6,9,11 and 17 and Wii taking spots 3,4,5,8,15 and 16.

The slowdown in sales has largely been credited to a decrees in major releases during the month. Big titles such as Metal Gear Solid 4, GTA IV, Mario Kart and Wii fit had just been released during the same period last year, contributing to the 31% year on year decline.
With so few big releases over the past two months, many of the top twenty spots have been filled by aging titles.
