Halo fans will be disappointed to hear that Peter Jackson’s planned feature film of the game is no longer happening.
The movie was announced in September 2006 when game developers Bungie confirmed the existence of the initiative but was later postponed after 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios pulled out of the idea a month later.
Initially the movie was put on hold until new distributors could be found and was slated for a late 2009 release. Despite this Jackson revealed to Joystiq that the “Halo project is no longer happening, it sort of collapsed when the movie didn’t end up happening.”
“Microsoft has a whole strategy with the Halo property, and when the rights expired with the two studios, that sort of ended my involvement with the project.”
When asked about how he got involved with Halo in the first place Jackson added that “I have a son who is a teenager now, and he was really into Halo 2. So, I ended up playing it and then I went back through and played the original and I loved it.”
Currently Jackson is marketing his new movie with SA director Niel Blomkamp. District 9 is based on a short film entitled Alive in Joburg in which a group of aliens are kept against their will in apartheid like conditions.
