Unreal Tournament 3 may be the last Unreal Tournament (UT) title we see for the next few years according to Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney.
The first Unreal Tournament was released in 1999 and was followed periodically by almsot annual Unreal Tournament releases such as UT2, UT 2004 and most recently Unreal Tournament 3 in 2007 to name but a few.
Sweeney announced that the studio would not be releasing any more UT games for the next ‘several years’.
Sweeny told BigDownload that “Unreal Tournament is certainly a major long-term priority, but we’re planning not to release a major retail game in the series for several years.”
He went on to say “We have that effort somewhat on hold while we work on a few other initiatives.”
“Sometimes it’s okay to let people miss a property,” said Sweeney, giving Fallout 3 as an example of a title which enjoyed a strong comeback after 10 years of silence.
Unreal Tournament 3 was released in 2007 and received a relatively lukewarm reception. With strong competition in the online FPS space coming most notably from the likes of CoD4, the game has struggled to take hold.
Many gamers have responded to the news with the overwhelming consensus being that the break is much needed and that the franchise has been flogged too hard over the past ten years.
If any franchise needs a break, or to at least be reinvented it’s Unreal Tournament.
