The Icelandic developer responsible for the popular space-based MMO Eve: Online, CCP, has announced at Game Developers Conference Europe (GDC) that it is busy developing a console based Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter (MMOFPS) for console.
The game will take place in the same world as Eve: Online, and is currently being called Dust 512. CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson did not explain the meaning behind the title, but did say that Eve: Online players may be able to figure it out.
Petursson revealed that the game has already been in development for 3 years, but did not give any clues as to when to expect the game. He did reveal that Dust 514 will be a team based action title which has players fighting across a variety of planets which exist in Eve: Online.
While the game will take place in the same world as the MMO which currently serves around 300,000 subscribers, it will perform as a standalone title. However, there will be some interesting links between the two titles.
Conflicts which occur within the console action title will have an effect on events which take place in the PC MMO. Furthermore, Eve: Online players will be able to fund mercenaries and give them goals in the Dust 514.
In Petursson’s GDC address he told the press that CCP is hoping that “these communities will meld over time”. When speaking about the relationshiops between the two games, and exactly how they will work together, the CEO quipped “While the fleet does the flying, the infantry does the dying.”.
