Blizzard’s annual conference, Blizzcon, took place over the weekend with a number of big announcements coming from the company at the event.
Diablo III is one of the developer’s most anticipated titles, with hordes of hack-and-slash RPG fans eager to get their hands on the next installment of the classic PC exclusive series.
The first and most disappointing piece of information to be revealed about the game at the event was that it will most probably not be out in 2010 if comments made by Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime are to be believed.
Morhaime told BlizzCon Live hosts Geoff Keighley and Kat Hunter that StarCraft II and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm are the only games expected for release in 2010. Fans of the series will be disappointed as the game was previously predicted for release in 2010.
The good news is that a console version of Diablo III is looking more than likely than ever.
Chief Operating Officer at Blizzard Paul Sams reportedly told Keighley that Blizzard has not “ruled out Diablo III for consoles and are currently talking to the first parties.”
Nothing more was revealed regarding the issue, but a Diablo III console port would make sense as RPG’s are generally well suited to consoles, as opposed to RTSs like StarCraft II which will definitely not enjoy the same multiplatform availability that Diablo III might.
At Blizzcon 2008 Morhaime stated that Blizzard would consider releasing their games on “the platforms which make the most sense”. The CEO went on to say that Diablo III “might very well work on consoles.”
In March it was revealed that Blizzard had been in talks with Microsoft over something to do with the Xbox 360, although the content of the discussions was never completely revealed. In light of Morhaime’s comments it would seem that the two companies may well have been discussing Diablo III for the Xbox 360.
