Dragon Age Origins lead designer Mike Laidlaw revealed recently in an interview with Destructoid that he hopes to see more sex included in video games in the future.
During the interview he was asked whether he feels sex should play a bigger role in modern gaming and whether the media are right to protest the showing of nudity and sex scenes in video games, to which he responded:
“Well I think what we’re seeing is an evolution of the age of gamer, the mainstream kind of impact that games are having, and we’re still battling the last of the perception that games are for kids,” he said. “So if games are for kids and sex is not for kids, why is sex in games? To my mind, the hurdle to cross is to say, ‘You know, games are not for kids.’ I’m not a kid, I probably burn a good three hours a night playing games, married, comfortably happy, definitely not a child.”
Dragon Age is being developed by Bioware, the very same development company that was embroiled in the media frenzy surrounding the showing of nudity and sex in Mass Effect last year. As a result Laidlaw is no stranger to the furore that can surround a game which pushes the boundries of what is acceptable with regards to sex.
More importantly Laidlaw believes that as a part of everyday life sex should not be entirely omitted from video games.
“Will we see more of [sex in games]? I hope so, I really do. I mean, it’s not a mandatory part of any experience, but is it something we should shy away from? I don’t think so, it’s part of the human experience, so why not? Does a game have to be about sex? No. Can it be in there? Sure. Why not?”
Dragon Age: Origins is due to be released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in November.
