The top selling console title in the US for the month was Madden NFL 10, the latest game in a franchise which unsurprisingly does exceedingly well in the US but goes largely unnoticed in the rest of the world. The Xbox 360 version of the latest Madden took the top spot in the August chart selling a whopping 928,000 units. The PS3 version took third place, with Wii Sports resort separating the two Madden releases at number 2.
Wii Fit dropped four places from July to August coming in at number 8, an amazing feat considering that the game was released in May 2008.
EA secured a total of 7 of the month’s top 20 spots, and Nintendo managed 9. The remaining four spots were taken by Square Enix, Eidos and Activision Blizzard.
While Nintendo may be experiencing receding Wii console sales, the company’s game sales are as strong as ever. EA’s success in August is largely due to the popularity of the Madden franchise, but can also be accredited to its recent mainstream drive with the likes of the EA Sports Active Bundle.
Arguably the world’s largest publisher, Activision Blizzard, had a very quiet month with just one title – Wolfenstein – barely making the top 20.
This month and the next few months have a variety of exciting titles scheduled for release, including Dirt 2, Borderlands, Modern Warfare 2, Forza 3 and more which are likely to dominate forthcoming sales charts.
