Two of the world’s most competitive Quake Live players visited South Africa to play in the DreamHack Quake Reborn tournament which took place at rAge last weekend.
Sebastian “Spart1e” Siira and Pierre-Emeric “l1nkje” Portier represented Fnatic, a professional gaming team which consists of players from all over the world who make a living from playing games.
The Fnatic Team won the Esports Team of the Year Award 2006 and 2009 and are the current reigning ESL IEM Champions.
MSI flew the two players out for the weekend, where they competed in the tournament, coming in first and second place respectively. The grand prize trip to Dreamhack in Sweden was graciously handed to the first South African finisher, Stephen “Ph4ntom” Cloete.
The Fnatic players have posted up a blog, detailing their experience in SA, from eating and drinking out at Monte Casino, to their impressions of the rAge expo and competing against local gamers.
“Around 7pm, we went out to a fancy Thai food restaurant, and as far as I can tell, it was the best night of the trip. We tried a bit of everything, everyone was sharing his food, we tried local beers, and some crazy cocktails,“ writes L1nkje, describing a night out in Johannesburg.
L1nkje also describes various matches he played at the tournament, including his semi-final against Stephen “Ph4ntom” Cloete.
“I played against Ph4ntom, he removed hub, I removed t4, picked dm9 and he picked ZTN. I was pretty happy about the map pick, because I wanted to pick ZTN at first against him. The first 3-4 minutes of the ZTN game were very crazy. It was close, we both played very defensively. But I managed to take the lead and make the win,” said L1nkje about his semi-final against SA’s best.
