Late last month, BTGames announced their Ultimate Gamer competition. The competition aimed to find SA’s best console gamers. A number of different games were played across a few weeks to find the top gamer.
The competition saw gamers facing off on Xbox360, PS3 and Wii, and was launched in celebration of the opening of a new Eastgate branch.
The competition was broken into three tiers. Tier 1 was an open entry first round. Gamers could enter freely and play as many rounds as they wanted in order to submit their highest scores. Once all initial entrants had entered their final scores, the top 6 scoring players were called back to participate in Tier 2.
Tier 2 put the top six up against each other, and the three top finishers went through to the final round.
Players did not know what games they would be participating in in Tier 2, and were surprised to discover the unreleased DJ Hero setup for the semi-final. The players were taken through a brief tutorial, followed by a few practice rounds.
Rob “GrIdL0cK” Clegg of Pantheon Gaming set the top score in this round . Players in this round went on to compete in Red Faction: Guerilla, where they had to do as much terrain damage as possible within an allotted time period, and Wii Sports Resort.
The final Tier followed shortly after Tier 2, and players were pitted against each other in Guitar Hero 5, Wii Sports Resort Archery and King of Fighters. The first two games followed the same format as the rest of the competition, with winners being decided by high scores.
The final however, saw Rob “GrIdL0cK” Clegg and Dale Lince go head-to-head on the arcade fighter; King of Fighters. Clegg took the first round in the match but Lince came back in the second. The third and final round in King of Fighters decided the winner for the entire competition, and Lince managed to defeat Clegg without much trouble.
The final standings for the competition were as follows

5th. Colin Bosman
Lince wins a PlayStation 3 as well as a R5000 BTGames voucher, while Clegg wins a R3000 BTGames voucher and Ben wins a R2000 BTGames voucher.
