It would seem that a number of people are already playing Infinity Ward’s soon to be released military themed first person shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (MW2).
The first video emerged over the weekend, revealing that the game would feature a third-person mode. Infinity Ward has since confirmed that third person gameplay will be a present in MW2.
A second video has emerged, this one giving players a walkthrough of the game’s first mission.
Unlike previous games in the series, where players are put into the shoes of a soldier, Modern Warfare 2 will kick off with players taking on the role of one of four terrorists, as they casually stroll through a busy airport slaughtering innocent civilians.
The video has led to a significant community backlash, with most who watch it describing the experience as ‘disturbing’.
Based on many responses, one has to wonder whether Infinity Ward has crossed the line between FPS and murder simulator. Furthermore, it remains to be seen what sort of classification this sort of extreme yet casually portrayed violence earns.
In defense of the developer, the first mission is currently being viewed out of context. One must applaud the boldness of the writers for taking the game in a direction that will induce new and difficult emotions, but concerns over the effect that this kind of in-game violence may have on society as a whole are sure to be raised.
