Crytek: “it’s always been about graphics driving gameplay”

15 April 2013

Crytek has become known to always deliver on the graphical front of its games, and while some may think that graphics can overshadow a focus on gameplay, the company’s CEO assures that the graphical push assists the gameplay aspect of its titles.

“People say that graphics don’t matter,” said Cevat Yerli, “but play Crysis and tell me they don’t matter. It’s always been about graphics driving gameplay.”

Yerli went into some specifics, saying that certain graphical elements can bolster the gameplay experience, such as Crysis 3’s dynamic vegetation, which can help locate enemy movement by the way that the grass moves.

“Graphics, whether it’s lighting or shadows, puts you in a different emotional context and drives the immersion,” Yerli said. “And immersion is effectively the number one thing we can use to help you buy into the world.”

Crysis 3 released in February to some impressive reviews, however, some critics did find certain shortcomings in the game.

Nope game play drives game play and not graphics, this was true in the 90’s and still to this day its true.

Why does all the indi games do so well then because they have better GFX than AAA titles ?

    Angry Birds
    Minecraft
    Limbo
    Castle Crasher
    Dota
    Torchlite
    psychonauts
    Amnesia

    etc …..

The secret is game play ….. and nothing else doesn’t matter how much PR spin you put on it.
