Xbox One headset and adapter costs a pretty penny

12 February 2014

Microsoft has revealed its official Xbox One stereo headset for the Xbox One – it looks quite snazzy, costs £59.99/$79.99 (±R1,000), and launches in March.

Microsoft hasn’t revealed much in the way of technical specs, but do claim the headset has an audio spectrum of 20Hz – 20kHz. As we can see from the press shot, the large over-ear pads look pretty comfortable. The directional microphone boom appears to swivel out of the way.

The headset comes with a detachable Xbox One stereo headset adapter which will be required to use any headset not specifically designed to work with the Xbox One. That adapter plugs into the Xbox One controller and can control game/chat/master volume. The adapter as a separate purchase costs £19.99/$24.99 (±R360).

There are a few technical notes on compatibility:

  • Legacy gaming headsets receive game audio from the back of the console from the S/PDIF port, and receive chat audio by connecting the 2.5 mm chat cable to the adapter.
  • New Xbox One Stereo Headsets receive chat and stereo directly from the adapter. There is no need to connect anything to the console.
  • Any 3.5 mm stereo headset (that uses the CTIA plug standard) can receive stereo game audio by plugging into the adapter.
