Micro Drone 2.0 – Flying camera for under R1,500

UK-based Extreme Fliers launched its Micro Drone 2.0 radio-controlled quad-rotor helicopter at rAge on Friday, 10 October 2014, offering a bundle deal that includes the quadcopter and camera module for R1,400.

The device weighs in at 58 grams (without any extra modules installed), and uses the unlicensed 2.4GHz band for the remote control, which developer Vernon Kerswell said gives it about 120m range.

In its default configuration the Micro Drone 2.0 can carry around 20g over and above the almost 60g of the helicopter itself (or approximately 20g per motor, Kerswell said).

The Micro Drone 2.0 is expected to retail for R1,200 in South Africa, and usually the camera kit will cost R600 on it own, but for the local launch at rAge, Kerswell said they’re offering a bundle deal that includes both at a reduced price.

Inside the camera kit you’ll get a camera module, screwdriver, 2GB microSD card, and USB adapter.

The camera itself captures video in 640×480 resolution and is mounted on a horizontal swivel, which lets you aim it forward or down.

According to Kerswell, the Micro Drone 2.0 is completely modular and “3D printing friendly”, explaining that those who might be so inclined may design and print their own modules for the quadcopter.

It has an 8 minute flying time, 60 minute charge time, with extra batteries on sale for those who don’t want to wait 60 minutes between flights. The Micro Drone may be charged with a normal USB cable.
